deny any improper money raised at October event By Steve Terrell The New Mexican During the 2002 election season Bill Richardson a candidate for governor returned thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from insurance companies that had come from a fundraisSng event involving Eric Serna Sema as state superintendent of insurance is responsible for regulating the industry Three years later Serna hosted another fundraiser for a candidate This time state Rep Luciano Lucky Varela DSanta Fe An October fundraiser at the Rio Chama Steakhouse attended by several people with ties to the insurance industry brought in more than for Varela At the time he was intending to seek re election to his seat in the House of Repre sentatives But following tije resignation of indicted state Treasurer Robert Vigil in late October Varela has decided to run for treasurer Both Varela and Sema say there is noth ing improper about the money raised at the event There were two or three insurance Tuesday afternoon The sixth annual Santa Fe Film Festival kicks off today with a screening of the documentary Elias Rivera Through the Eyes of a Master at the Scottish Rite Temple By Robert Nott The New Mexican A throng of trolls and androids appeared at The Film Center on Tuesday to protest their depiction in the New Mexicomade scifi comedy Zen and the Asteroid The funny thing is these androids and trolls are characters in the movie which screens as part of the festival this year The sixth annual Santa Fe Film Festival a fiveday event comprising movie screen ings panel discussions parties and an awards ceremony kicks off with a screening of the documentary Elias Rivera Through the Eyes of a Master at 7 pan tonight at the Scottish Rite Temple According to Jon Bowman executive director of the festival roughly 215 films will be screened during the event which is expected to draw to patrons Interviewed Tuesday afternoon while he was orchestrating a dress rehearsal for the festivals awards ceremony in the temples theater Bow man said I always get jittery right before it starts but so far most of our problems seem pretty solvable One of those problems Bowman said is that David
