mishap By ANDY LENDERMAN The New Mexican LOS ALAMOS A Los Alamos National Labo ratory employee was hospitalized for six days in July after being exposed to fumes from a toxic chemical the lab reported Tuesday A second employee was exposed to the same mixture of hydrochloric and nitric acids but was not hospi talised The labs top management apparently didnt learn of the earlyJune incident resulting in the hospitalization until Aug 3 Now a third employee has been placed on paid leave while lab officials and federal Department of Energy investigators look into the incident and why Director Robert Kuckuck was not informed until last week The department is sending in a team of experts to look into this incident as well as another con tamination case which involved americium 241 a mademade radioactive metal lab spokeswoman Kathy DeLucas said Tuesday Lab managers bear the responsibility for ensuring and promoting a safe working environ ment at this Kuckuck told employ ees Tuesday New Mexican After weeks of petition drives newspa per ads and lobbying of city officials debate over a proposed new Wal Mart store is scheduled to culminate in front of theSanta Fe tonight While the issue technically involves only landuse rules arguments in recent weeks have ranged from global politics to local economics Inclusion of a WalMart Supercenter in the project at the southern end of Cerrillos Road has raised the ire of critics of the worlds largest retailer who portray the Arkansas based company as unethical and exploitative They decry the companys ability to drive out Lauren The New Mexican smaller locally owned competitors Supporters of the project however argue the company provides goods and services at prices workingclass families in Santa Fe can afford Consideration of a complaint to open an inves tigation into whether Santa Fes municipal judge altered sentencing records the head of the New Mexi cos judicial branch said Chief Justice Richard Bosson of the New Mexico Supreme Court vyhich has disci plinary authority over judges said he hadnt talked with commission direc tor Jim Noel about a report in Sundays New Mexican of allegations concern ing Judge Frances Gallegos but it is absolutely the kind of thing that would interest Thecommissions probes of judi cial conduct are kept secret until findings are issued The director of a group seeking strict enforcement of laws against driving while intoxicated this week publicly called for a state investiga tion into the newspapers report in which a former citycourt employee said Gallegos altered records sent to the state Motor Vehicle Division sometimes inflating sentences she gave drunkdriving offenders The judge has contended that she was correcting clerical errors when she sought to amend records in the wake of a 2004 report by the DWI Resource Center in Albuquer que that criticized her handling of cases On Tuesday Gallegos who ear lier said she would issue a formal statement was said to be
