llfeld was arrested at 8 Thursday in llfeld and served an unspecified warrant charging fail ure to appear Funeral services and memorials DON MERMEJO 19172003 Highly respected elder Don Msrmejo age 85 from Picuris Pueblo passed away peacefully in the early morning hours Monday March 2003 of 24 Don Mermejo surrounded by his family at the Santa Fe Indian Hospital Don was bom September 30 1917 in Picuris Pueblo He lived in Picuris all his childhood was a Golden Gloves Boxer at the Santa Fe Indian School and later at age 20 married the love of his life Augustina Lopez on May 23 1938 at San Lorenzo Church in Picuris Pueblo They enjoyed 59 years of a loving marriage until the passing of his beloved wife Augustina on September 4 1997 Don was a farmer around the Picuris and Penasco community and also worked as section hand for the Union Pacific and Denver Rio Grande Railroad Don and Augustina were former residents of Ophir and Stockton Utah where Don worked as a welder at the Tooeie Ordinance Depot and retired at age 55 shortly after his son Lance Corporal Joseph Michael Mermejo United States Marine Corps was killed in action March 29 1969 in Vietnam Don Augustina and their family returned to Picuris Pueblo where Don continued with farming cutting and selling wood and alfalfa and being a participating member in the Picuris Pueblo Tribe such as serving on the Tribal Council working as Game and Fish Warden and living the traditional Picuris life Dons life was a full one and he thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his family as well as other interests including hunting fishing silversmithing creating traditional Indian beadwork and weaving ceremonial belts watching live and televised professional boxing and wrestling matches he also liked martial arts movies especially ones starring Jackie Chan he frequented many Pueblos Feast Days as well as the casinos especially in his later years he was an avid Denver Bronco fan and a proud supporter of the Santa Fe Indian School athletics especially when the grandchildren were playing Don was a wonderful loving husband father grandfather and greatgrandfather who touched the lives of many people during his life through endless acts of kindness He will long be remembered as a gentle hardworking man with a generous heart a warm sense of humor a strong Picuris spirituality and an unconditional love for family Don was preceded in death by his wife Augustina two infant sons son Joseph Michael Mermejo grandson Joseph James Mermejo and brothers Domingo Mermejo and Reyes Martinez He is survived by his two sisters Bertha Suina and Rose Allrunner brother Robert Duran sisterinlaw Annie Martinez four sons Joe Quanchello Peter Mermejo Joe Howard Mermejo and Randy Mermejo four daughters Caroline Kowalski Sadie Stabenow Donna Mermejo and Susie Mermejo 10 grandchildren 13 great grandchildren as well as many good friends cousins nieces nephews and relatives Funeral Mass was held on Tuesday March 25 2003 at San Lorenzo Church in Picuris Pueblo interment Picuris Pueblo cemetery followed by traditional Picuris tribal rites I he family is very appreciative of the prayers and support of so many people who Stevenson School and St Pauls Academy He graduated from Stanford University and received a with honors in Modem Thought andLiterature in 1983 At the University of Southern Californias School of he received an in Screenwriting and Film Production in 1988 Bretts documentary film EmU about his Czechoslovakian grandfather played in festivals and won awards all over the world including the Cine Golden Eagle Best Documentary awards at the Atlanta Santa Fe and Chicago Intl Film Festivals and New Films New Directors at MOMA in New York City Brett taught in the Humanities Division at Pepperdine University and the writing program at UCLA specializing in film and popular culture At Pepperdine he received the Ronald Tyler Achievement Award for enhancing the quality of life in the Pepperdine community in 1993 and the award for Outstanding Faculty Member in 2003 Throughout his life Brett was an allaround athlete excelling at football basketball hockey lacrosse and golf He was an accomplished chef and a dedicated gourmand a talented photographer and a gifted He traveled all over the world and was fluent in Italian Brett is survived by his wife Laura Chavez Silverman of Los Angeles his mother and stepfather Yveta Synek Graff and Malcolm Graff of New York City his father Robert Love of Santa Fe NM his brother Steve sisterinlaw Jeanie and nephew Chase Love of Studio City CA and extended family friends and students to whom he will always be an inspiration A memorial service for Brett will be held at the chapel at Pepperdine University in Malibu this Saturday April 19th cancer For decades she visited Santa Fe at least annually and was an ardent and astute collector of Native American art She was an active supporter of SWAIA and sponsored several Indian Market awards Eloise loved Santa Fe Indian Market and the opportunity to collect beautiful pottery and meet the artists She is survived by her husband Alfred daughters Melanie Broad and Patricia Eckel stepsons James and Stephen Parks and 10 wonderful grandchildren CONSUELO ROMERO Also known as Connie or age 72 has risen with the Lord on April 14 2003 Connie was born in Santa Fe NM on October 22 1930 She was married to David R Romero in 1952 A resident of Albuquerque NM for 48 years She had many many friends She was a long time Bowler and Avon Representative Being a parishioner of St Therese of the Little Flower Church and Our Lady of Guadalupe Church she was a Lector and played an active roll in the Cursillo Movement Connie enjoyed many things in life from camping and traveling with her young family to her retirement year trips with her husband David She especially enjoyed the long road trips where prayer and quality time took place She was an avid Lady Lobo Fan and loved to CHEER them on Her favorite hobby was shopping She thrived to get a bargain She always knew what everyone liked and her face would light up when they opened it with the joy she expected shed see She loved to take care of her husband her children her grandchildren and her mother In everything she did she showed love Everyone she touched she taught Family Faith Love Friendship and so much more In Gods Kingdom she joins her father Manuel Ortiz and soninlaw Joe Estrada She leaves behind her loving and devoted husband of 50 years David R Romero her mother Erminia Ortiz her sons Raymond Charley Michael and Orlando
