New Mexican (Newspaper) - April 5, 2005, Santa Fe, New Mexico THE SANTA FE Locally owned and independent Serving New Mexico for 156 years TUESDAY APRIL 5 2005 FIFTY CENTS Cardinals begin process of selecting new pontiff By LIZ SLY Chicago Tribune VATICAN CITY The General Congregation of Cardinals which met Monday for the first time since the popes death marked the infor mal start of what amounts to one of the worlds oldest election Dressed in scarlet hats and capes 65 of the 183 Cardinals who arrived in time gathered at the Vatican for the first session of the General Congrega tion of the meantime all the cardinals will meet daily giving them an opportunity to get to know each other size each other up and rate the credentials of potential candidates making this the unofficial start of the process It will be no ordinary election Campaigning is frowned upon and indeed any cardinal who may wish to be pope would be best advised to keep that to himself A cardinal who was seen to be preempting Gods will by promoting his own chances would be quickly shunted aside This is not a meeting of sharehold ers They are not fighting for this They are fighting for the said Saverio Gaeta editor of the Vati canbased Christian Family magazine They are churchmen and Im sure they want whats best for the There are candidates however potentially a large number because any baptized male may
