does it really mean Santa Fe city planning offi cials touted the percent dropout rate from city public high schools in the 2002 03 school year when they unveiled the 2005 Santa Fe Trends report at a City Coun cil meeting Wednesday The report says the rate dropped by almost half from per cent in 200102 But the figure could be mis leading to people who assume it represents the percentage of highschool students who dropped out in the four years between their freshman year and graduation Instead it represents only the number of students who dropped out in one year Christopher Swanson a senior research associate at The Urban Institute in Wash ington who has studied highschooldropout rates said while the low numbers arent necessarily misleading there is a big difference between dropout rates and highschool completion rates It may be good to know that percent of students are dropping out in one year but intuitively what you want to know is out of a freshman class how many are going to Swanson said Ruthanne Greeley spokes woman for the schools said district officials do not know the percentage of students who dropped out between their freshman year and graduation but the guesstimate is about 40 percent Greeley said the district gives raw data to the state which came up with the percent figure According to state figures 55 freshmen dropped out of Santa Fe Public Schools in 200203 47 sophomores dropped out 28 juniors dropped out and 10 seniors dropped out The statewide dropout rate is percent according to the state Greeley said district offi cials do their best to keep students who have moved or decided to attend private schools off the dropout list Jennifer Chavez FED spokeswoman said school offi cials should have more accu rate dropout rates in about four Please see DROPOUT Page A10 ;
