The times Man should read a Nicholas Nickleby a and he would and such authority As Charles Dickens could give him for the use of the word san Antonio will leave nothing undone to make her reception of the railway brakeman such a one As is fitting her enviable record As the most hospitable City in Texas. To tins years of famine will very Likely succeed the years of plenty. All indications Point that Way and the tone of the press All Over the country is very hopeful. The democracy Are at loggers Heads Over the disposition of their county Campaign fund. Only in this do they seem agreed. They will not use it to pay for free Trade speeches in the Wool Market of Texas. Brother Cranfill seems to have been shaken from his base by Wiggins pre diction. Nothing has been heard of him Sloe that Date. Hal. Greer also seems to have dropped into the Gap of that quake. Senator Coke we Are told will make several speeches this Campaign explaining what democracy is. The senator has a Large contract. When he finishes who will explain what Coke is the times turn Hies to the Racket of the Galveston news and agonies because no one howls the bloody shirt refrain which has always been Campaign Musio in the ears of democratic sinners. Narry howl. Jell saves us the trouble. The express is needlessly alarmed Over the claims of republicans this inning. The republicans could not even assert and maintain a claim to a Loket of their own. Their poverty however has been declared in a fusion court Wiloh lacks jurisdiction. Some unsophisticated people seem surprised at the admission made by the a personal ring a that the Large number of candidates seeking office retards their action. Personal politics is Only a scramble tor office has no principle about it and opens the Gates for a general scramble. It is a political curse. Will the meeting this evening ratify the bargain and Sale of county offices made about four months since if it does Oan the party of the first part deliver the goods next november if it does not in what predicament 1b be left and where is value received for that $3,000 to come from these questions Are the All absorbing ones in Bexar county political circles. Alderman Mackay feels very confident that the Survey at the head of the River will show the City rightfully seized of the property that he claimed. The matter is a very simple one. If the City owns that property title can not be held adversely to that claim of the City does not own property there no attempt will be made to Force an unwarranted claim thereto. The question of title Oan Only be settled in the courts. The dispatch Speaks. The Austin dispatch of last wednesday contains a Leader on the political situation in Travis county which is so applicable in nearly every sentence to the condition of things in Bexar county that we reproduce it almost entire. The editor of the evening paper assumes to Rule the utterances of the Light out of their forcefulness and pertinence because the editor did not carpet bag in Texas during the Davis regime. Perhaps the utterances of the dispatch May meet with More consideration. They Are As follows less than one month remains before the election takes place and sofar nothing Bas been done looking to the organization of the Republican party or making a canvass for the state ticket. Apathy and indifference on the part of the would be leaders of the party is manifested. Some six weeks ago a state ticket was at the demand of the republicans put in the held. It was the unanimous expression of the delegates to the state convention that a thorough canvass of the state should be made. So far the Only meetings that have been held were addressed by our candidate for governor who is working with a will Iii North Texas. The state committee and its chairman have absolutely done nothing. Not a Public meeting has been called not a document distributed. No efforts to secure an organization a been made. The men who assume to Lead the party absolutely act As if they did not desire to see it increase Iii strength. The Only object they seem to have is to use the party so As to keep themselves in front that if the republicans should elect the next president they May control Tho offices. The to i ii is that this is the real cause Wile there is no successful Republican party in the South. In he spoils Hunters do not want a Strong party and until the honest republicans men who Are republicans from principle arise and take control of the party there never will tie a successful Republican organization in the South. The Way things Are managed in this Section is disgusting to All honest republicans. We have no candidate for Congress Iii this District in which a Republican had a proper Canvas been made could have been elected. There is i o excuse Why a Democrat of the Sayers Stripe should be sent to Congress from this District and the Only reason that he will be elected is the indifference and want of management on the part of the leaders of the party. We have no candidates in the Field for he legislature simply because the leaders of the party do not want any. They Are working in the interest of democratic candidates. For reasons Best known to themselves they seem to care More for the Success of an Ultra Bourbon free Trade Democrat like judge Terrell to the Senate than they do to elect republicans to office. The entire time of the county executive Campaign committee seems to be Given to secure the election of a county ticket made up of one half democrats one half republicans. It is about time that this should end. Tile vote in this county is very nearly evenly divid Between the republicans and democrats and there is no reason Why our state ticket should not have a Good majority this year. We now Appeal to All honest republicans to come out organize take the reins in their own hands and make an aggressive canvass on Republican principles. Let the trifles and traders in the party be sent to the rear and let honest and aggressive republicans be put to the front. We cordially commend this editorial to the consideration of our county committee in general and to the disorganized of the Republican party in Bexar county in particular. In the language of the dispatch a let the traders be sent to the humiliated and disgraced As the party Lins been in this county by those who claim leadership by virtue of their years of Dis organizing Effort it would seem that matters Are no better in Travis county is it a coincidence merely that the two men whom Hie Light antagonized at the beginning of tile Campaign on the ground of their being republicans for personal ends Are tile men who control the Republican party in Travis and Bexar counties and controlling it have relegated it to inactivity such republicanism makes Texas Blush for shame. Cowardice Lias never been considered an american vice. Tile sailors on our Inland Waters As Well As tile tars on our Salt seas Are noted for their bravery. This being so the cowardice of the Captain of the Steamer Eagle in refusing to assist the burning Mascotte is More conspicuous and issuing Forth a general condemnation. It is hut Justice to emphasise the indignation of the Pilot and officers of the Eagle at the conduct of their Superior officer. Tile testimony All goes to show that had the Captain of the Eagle been a Brave generous Man the thirty jives lost on Board the Mascotte would have been reduced to those who were killed by the explosion. The St. Louis Globe Democrat Lias been so Busy giving details of the a veiled Prophet illumination that its usual Cable dispatches have been left out. A As a consequence the foreign news dispatches of the associated press Are not forthcoming. As the Globe Democrat takes snuff ail the press Dis patches sneeze. To Days dispatches Are reproduced from yesterdays Globe Democrat. What Bulgaria will eventually do seems much More Uncertain than what she will become. She appears doomed to become a dependency of Russia her people slaves and Ber Independence a thing of the past. This has been the Fate of All free states in Europe Switzer land Only excepted. The desire for free Dom is answered with deprivation of political existence. The sugar crop. Interesting notes from sugar land facts about Cotton Etc. Kultur Hun Antonio Liu it. The following interesting though rather Brief letter on the sugar crop is written for the Light by or. W. J. Moynahan now private Secretary of colonel e la. Cunningham but who was formerly a train dispatcher on the Sunset railway at this depot. Or. Moynahan was formerly on the staff of the Chicago times and it will be seen his pen has not lost any of its old time reporters swing even if it has that commendable trait so rare in reporters in general Brevity and Point while the Cotton crop in the Vicinity will be a most Complete failure this season on account of the heavy Rains and excessive winds blowing Cotton out of bolls and scattering it around on the ground and the infectious Cotton insects the sugar Cane crop will amply cover ail losses sustained by the Large planters. Experienced sugar makers claim that the sugar Cane this season will be the largest and Best crop Ever harvested in Texas. It is estimated that on several plantations the yield will average 10,000 to 16,000 pounds of sugar and several Hundred Gallons of molasses to an acre. Planters always and a Good and steady Market for sugar and As they have All the facilities on their plantations necessary to make the same Oan put any Grade of sugar desired on the Market at a very Low Price. Sugar Cane will in a very Short time become the leading crop of Texas. Planters Are All becoming aware of this and in a few years where you can now see thousands of acres of Cotton you will see the luxuriant sugar Cane. Col. E. Ii. Cunningham of san Antonio has one of the largest plantations in this locality in 10,000 to 12.000 acres and he is continually adding More principally devoted to raising sugar Cane and Cotton lie will place in the Market tills season about 1,750,000 pounds of sugar and also several thousand Gallons of line molasses. He contemplates putting Bis entire Plantation under the cultivation of sugar Cane As the Cotton crop this season was a miserable failure. Col. Cunningham is at present experimenting with an Artesian Well and if it proves a Success will place several of them in different parts of the Plantation for irrigation purposes. He is a thorough and energetic planter and his Plantation will soon rank among the Best in the South. Col. L. A. Ellis owns an adjoining Plantation of several thousand acres and everything is in a flourishing condition. He employees Are mostly All coloured convicts who do Good service. Among the other Large plantations in this locality everything is in Good condition except the Cotton crop. The sugar Cane grinding will commence about nov. 10th, when there will be employment open tor several Hundred labourers to assist in the red series and in harvesting Cane. Vav. J. M. Will the democratic Kite wag the Republican Tail in this fusion movement or vice versa. The democratic font in. Gent selected their committee of one Hundred and six last evening and they adjourned to meet in Turner Hall tonight. The left Wing because they will be left met in Bohol a a Ball the night before last selected a committee of sixty and adjourned to meet in k. Of p. Hall to night. The coloured delegation to the number of thirty were to meet with the sex Secretary a combination. The thing seems mixed. Are we to have two fun a locusts if not and the sections Coal Lesce How much Republican grist will the sixty be Able to grind out As against the other one Hundred and thirty six ? Jeff Davis letter to Sherman will very probably Cost the democratic party the control of Indianna this fall. The dem of Ray of Ohio and Indiana Are raving Over that letter As the most damaging document that could have been issued and which while it could do possible Good Hab done incalculable harm. To work of this Campaign is being done in North and East Texas. The re publicans of those sections Are Alert Active and quietly putting in work where it will do most Good. In Western Texas and southwestern the republicans Are so Busy to gating traitors within their own Camp that they have no Opportunity to organize against Demon racy. The democracy find it easier subsidize a few Republican Bosses and so tie the hands of the party than to make any open Issue. Her irber in mind that Frauk j.
