When such men As Leland Stanford of California enter heartily into the Effort to secure such Laws in this country As will facilitate the organization of cooperative societies and gives such reasons for his action As were recently published in a four column article in the new York Tribune it cannot be doubted that some legislation will result decidedly beneficial to the Labouring classes. Or. Stanford starts out with the theory that As capital is the product of labor there cannot be any real antagonism Between them. Keeping this fundamental principle Ever before reasons that All apparent conflicts Between labor and capital Are and in their very nature must be deceptive. The value of everything depending upon its susceptibility of being converted into property just As the Gold in the mine is valueless unless converted through labor into that which Oan be made useful to Man. Or. Sanford a proposition is that the conversion of original raw materials into property in the Way of wares merchandise fabrics or works of Art resides wholly in their capability under the manipulations of labor of being so converted. He regards capital As stored up Foroe originally created by labor and in the nature of a motor which perpetuates the propelling Force of a machine after the original Power by which the motion was imparted Bas leased to act. After showing the advantage of capital and How All capital properly invested is advantageous to labor the senator enters upon an elucidation of the work and benefits of to operative enterprises. The Early mining enterprises of California which were wonderfully successful he shows to have been of operative enterprises. The employers of labor he regards As the greatest of human benefactors and considers the one fact of the profitable Ness of labor the sole guarantee of its continued employment. From this fact he argues that capital in hiring labor has no advantage Over labor in associating itself co operatively and thus hiring itself because the Labouring men of the present Day have sufficient intelligence to direct their own co operative enterprises profitably. So Long As capital employs labor so Long labor will find capital in the ascendant but when labor employs itself it becomes its own master. The dignity of labor the rewards of labor and the demand for labor would All be increased by of operation and its result would be a general Advance in the conditions of All classes. The Post a lion on this question taken by general Stanford is one of Broad and advanced views. It is thoroughly humanitarian distinctively american and comes from a source that cannot but command respectful attention in places where the views of a Mere social economist would not find any consideration will fare sumptuously.
