The third Ward drainage. Valuable information and pertinent observations upon the subject. Editor san Antonio Light Iii accordance with the plans for City improvement 50, xxx is to tie spent forthwith Aud the third wan gets til xxx. Or this sum $7000. As proposed by the aldermen will be devoted to the drainage of Crockett Bonham Bowie Blum and Nacogdoches streets and the Alamo Plaza. By one will deny that the drainage is necessary in the streets named for every time there is a big rain they Are hoi sled with water standing some times to the depth of two feet and As a consequence the cellars privies cisterns Etc., Are tilled with dirty water causing much annoyance and loss but there Are those who believe the necessary improvements can be Well effected without monopolizing much of the appropriation. Your correspondent has made careful inquiry into the matter and Linda that the flooding is occasioned mainly by the overflow of the Madre ditch Between Nacogdoches and Crockett streets. At one time this was relieved by the old Valley ditch but that is now tilled up to the top of the Are on Nolan Street and thus instead of the water being taken South and out of the City it is driven North into the Madre ditch anti increases the overflow. In Days that Are gone. Ditch commissioner Wurzbach father of our county judge when storms were threatened would ride and even walk to the head of the River to close Tho water Gates and thus prevent the flow of the River water into the ditch but that is not done now. The Section was drained some time ago by a ennui on Bonham Street 18 inches wide and Between two and three feet deep but this was found to be far too Small for the proper drainage. Instead of widening this canal the City Council closed it up put in a ten Inch Cement pipe and Cut a Small canal from Bowie Street connecting tooth with the big sewer that runs from the Arbeiter Verein Hall to the Bridge on Commerce Street where it finds ail outlet into the River but these channels and openings into the sewer were far too Small to be effective. The it xxx i is to be used in making Brick and pipe sewers to the River Aud if properly done would be an effectual remedy tor the overflow but Many persons think that of a wide canal having sectional planks removable for cleaning purposes As in the ease of tile Acequia Street ditch were Cut from Blum net Aud connected by spacious openings with the big sewer on East Commerce Street the same results could be obtained for about $500. Thus leaving a larger sum for Hie Alamo Plaza and other needed improvements in the third wan of tile proposed drainage is merely to carry off the overflow it would appear that the stoppage of the River water at the Burec of the Madre ditch and the proposed canal would answer ail practical purpose for years to come. If on the other hand it is intended that the $7 x u sewer shall form the nucleus of an efficient system of sewerage then it should have the Hearty endorsement of the people. The fact is opposition Iii this and other matters is mainly occasioned by the people having to a Light of the sinking of the Oregon. The Pilot boat and the Small boats had left the sinking ship with heavy loads of human freight having about one Hundred persons aboard. The Steamer was settling lower each minute the Pron timing much lower than the a tem and it seemed that each moment was to be the last. We could a boost feel the ast convulsive quiver preparatory to the anal plunge. This was an exceedingly trying moment. There were no life preservers As the heavy sea had carried them Overly card. Standing rather apart from the other passengers was a Beautiful girl whose terrified face depicted the horrors of the fearful experience. A tall handsome Young Man stood beside her with his Arm tenderly encircling her slender Waist. He was evidently trying to Comfort her with Hopes of Rescue but the Sweet creature saw to plainly that unless something unlocked for should occur they would soon lie at the Bottom of Tho great Ocean far away from Sweet Home and dear friends. The Young fellow was about to Tell his sweetheart that they were lost when one of the sailors raised a loud cry and looking Over the Bow of the boat the passengers saw something dark standing out Oward them and As the vessel drifted a Little nearer All saw that it was a great sign hanging suspended to something and upon the sign were these words a Emerson holds tile Bridge to help the folks Over a and in a few minutes they All stood safely upon old Mother Earth. They All Shook hands with a Uncle Emerson a and Many of them accepted the assistance he offered As they had lost All their effects on the sinking ship. 0-7 notice. Travis Assembly no. Adolphus Consolation. Adolph Somenck shaded by hts umbrella was walking along Alamo Street when he encountered two Young ladies who were also shaded by their parasols. Adolph gallantly stepped aside to make room for the ladies to pass but unfortunately he stepped too near the curbing Over balanced and fell heavily to the ground.
