Well of. Ooh a newspaper Rosing monday. April 19. 1886. The National Library. The Bill for the erection of a suitable Library building at the National capital is timely. There Baa been no measure among the thousands introduced this session More necessary and none which will be More generally approved by All who understand the utterly inadequate provisions now existing for the Tine collection of books and manuscript which form the National Library. In speaking of this Bill the Washington critic says there is one important provision lacking in the Bill to erect a National Library in this City. There should be a clause in the Bill requiring tile Library to to kept of eur on sundays. The Wisdom of this suggestion will not be questioned by any Broad gauged mind in this generation. It should receive the immediate attention of our a representatives and the necessary clause be made a part of the Bill before it passes to its final Reading. The British museum is now opened on sunday All the gardens and museums of natural objects in London Are so opened and it is High time that the recognition of sunday As a a people a Day was made by the unquestioned authority of a congressional enactment in so far As matters within their jurisdiction goes. In Boston All the libraries and museums and Art calluses Are opened on sunday the one Day in seven in which the treasures and privileges of these collections Are available for the people and this example of the bub might Well be made general throughout is no reasonable doubt that it would have a great influence for Good in All our cities. These collections of Art these stores of knowledge called libraries these museums of natural object Are of Worth Only As the knowledge they hold the instruction they convey and Lite study they stimulate Are made Avail Able for the people. By dosing the doors of these institutions on sunday you shut out the thousands for whose Benefit they Are most needed. The wealthy few can provide these things for themselves in private collections and do not need the Public ones. Public collections Are primarily for the people and if the people cannot have Access to them they cease to be available for the very purpose for which they were endowed. Sunday is the Peoples one Day in seven for Reading resting seeing enjoying and finding la life something outside the Treadmill round of their daily labors. This Day sacred to labor should not be defrauded of anything that May minister to the pleasure or instruction of the labourer and his family. Open places like these and family visiting will to regularly made to them. Mother and children will not be left neglected at Home because father is taking Bis recreation somewhere that Mother and children must not accompany him. Shut these libraries and museums any other Day in the week rather on the one Day in which the people Oan find time to visit them if they cannot be opened for the people for whom they were originally intended then done to open them at All. As managed in Many of the cities the Public Library and Reading room which should be free As air to Labouring people Are As practically closed to them As though they were not in existence. The principle is wrong that adjudged the opening of these places on sunday injurious and the practice of closing thens against the people is simply pernicious. Law and order league in pursuing the violators of the Law to the bitter end. There Are other cities not excepting san Antonio that might be profited by the wholesome and wholesale enforcement of the Laws on their several statute books on this subject. We have a stringent Law against Selling liquor to minors and it should be enforced. Every reputable Saloon keeper in the City would be glad to see it enforced and would heartily second every Effort of the authorities to put it into execution. Children and youths under the prescribed age Are Only a nuisance in such places have no Legal right there should be at Home rather than on the streets and everybody would be Milch better Oft were the Law against their presence in saloons rigidly enforced. Were it so enforced one of the very strongest objections to the License system would be removed and one of the most effective weapons of the prohibitionists taken out of their hands. The courier journal forecasting the possible defeat of the democracy next congressional innings says that a it will be due to the fact that the people have lost Faith in the democracy of the democratic we accept the courier journal As Good authority on Tho True inwardness of the democracy and pass. The Tariff debate in Congress will continue until june i some 40 Tariff tinkers having already announced their intentions of takings lip in. This president and Bis Cabinet Are somewhat seriously exercised Over that tenth Section of the civil service act which reads As follows no recommendation of any person who shall apply tor office or place under the provisions of this act w hich May be Given by any Helm tor or member of the House of representatives except As to the character or residence of on applicant shall be received or considered by any person concerned in making any examination or appointment under this aet. A careful examination of the several recommendations a the papers concerning which the Senate desired to see and were not permitted might throw some unwelcome Light upon the subject of removals and appointments. It May be that the refusal to permit the Senate to examine into said a a papers has a personal Side which in View of the Section above quoted it were Well to keep hidden from tile Garish Light of Day. It would be Well for a congressman to keep a Section no. Ion pasted in ids hat As it is Well known that forgetfulness in one of the sins that our Public servants Are heir to. George Augustus Sara is in India sick with fever discouraged and seriously broken both in health and spirits. A a the Houston fellow who shot bakery a hat is on a still Hunt for the san Antonio Quill that sputtered out the Swain scandal. So far its Odds against the hat. The Waco rambler is watching patiently for the prophecies storm of the 26th to Wash away some of the stagnation pollywog and frogs from the Side Street gutters. It to brute. Cincinnati in looking after a More perfect and Legal registration Law and in enforcing All known remedies for an impure ballot has not forgotten the duty she owes to her minors. There is a loud Call made by the times Star of that City for the enforcement of the Law against Selling liquor to minora and a warm commendation of the work of the the avoirdupois a of the present Cabinet and its chief Are attracting attention from those who have foiled to note any excessive weight of brain in the executive crowd. They scale from 175 pounds up to 335, Grover kicking the beam at 300. Manning when taken sick weighed 325, and All in ail the president and his advisers belong to the heavy democracy. Too heavy for the party to run Well under in the next Campaign. Florida is making Progress in Cocoa nut culture and 150,000 will be planted this season along her extreme Southern sea coast. The new York Sun is not a luminary that turns its Refulgente face towards Grover. There is a Rumor of possible coalition Between the whigs and tories for the defeat of Gladstone. It would be a sore coalition for the British Empire. The crop of candidates is still Green and not one of them All shows much Promise of maturity. There is a kind of Jonah a Gourd appearance about them that does not argue Well for their surfing the East winds of the coming convention. Waco like the Garden of the lord is Well watered but there All resemblance ceases. The City was fairly submerged by the floods of last week and on Friday the lower it ortion of town was a1 most one unbroken Sheet of water. A one reads of tile twelve Alderman of Gotham in 1884, the year that the National democracy came into Power ten of them Are arrested one surrendered one a fugitive All held in $25,000 Bonds and one seriously questions whether the Advent of that same democracy had any bearing upon the Issue. The coincidence is suggestive and the curious will speculate upon the possible chances these Aldermani thieves imagined they we Tild have under the new regime for feathering their own nests. The democracy and the country Are alike to he congratulated upon the manner in which these corruption lists were brought to Book. Tweed was but is no More. The Glen Rose daisies have formed an association boycotting every Young Man who uses intoxicants. No member of the a Daisy club is allowed to accept the escort of any Young Man who Crooks his Elbow at the bar or keep company with Bim under any circumstances. Were the club to organize a Branch in this City we fear the poor girls would have to a go it the South Carolina grangers have called a convention to meet at Columbia april 20, to nominate a candidate for governor. The disintegration of the Southern democracy is Only tile forerunner of the disintegration of the National democracy and there Are manifold and Manifest signs of a break up in the great strongholds. Even Texas shows signs of a thaw. Lord Dalhousie Gladstone a new Secretary for Scotland is a Strong personal Friend and supporter of his chief. His pronounced support of a Home Rule policy in 1870 Cost him the countenance of his old father and some $ >0,000, which the irate senior refused to pay for bus songs election expenses. The new Secretary is an intimate Friend of Wales and a Captain in the British Navy. Between the Fellows who try to prove what they can to understand and the Ether crowd who Are trying to understand what they can to prove there Are a Good Many in a continued muddle. The unanimity with which certain democratic journals of this state Are attempting to read the Houston Post out of the party is Only equated by the unanimity with which Uncle Dan a done to go. _ Texas journalism is an unknown equation Aud As deadly As unknown. One Section Orles out a if Terrell gets left he can charge it to the statesman a another says a Galveston news a and the woo examiner comes to the Rescue with the remark a if you want a Man knocked higher than a Kite or killed deader than a doer Nail just get one of those journals after him and he a a goner. Contrary Wise All Over the state the cry is heard a the san Antonio times has Laid out Ireland cold a and a Sui. Ross has ruined his chances by the advocacy of the woo of it can be conclusively shown that these charges Aud counter charges Are approximately Correct then these journals have deserved More of Texas than they have hitherto received such services to the state should not go unrequited. the emigration of the mormons to the Sandwich islands is the next move of the saints so said. King Kamakua will make it Lively for the descendants of Joseph. _ Dallas and fort Worth done to feel Good Worth a cent unless they Are spitting at each other like two Kilkenny cats. I purchased in this City a package of prof.
