D After exciting the people with ex hortations like this tho Messiah starts a certain song Ho calls upon women and all to join in the song and the ex citement is at the ho looks up into tho heavens religious revival led by a vigor ous and earnest exhortcr may easily picture what the same would bo among the ignorant and superstitious Indians In their dances the majority imagine they see and hearwhatever their prophet tolls them he hears Amid the din of the monotonous drums and the dolorous chant of hundreds of voices the Indian convert soon imagines that hohears joining5n the songthe onefamiliar voice ofhisdead mother and in the smoke that rolls above from a hundred fires he sees faces looking clown and hands beckon ing THE MESSIAH ALL FOB THE INDIAN RACE Captain Sam says that whilethe prophet advises allagainst taking up arms and going to war against tho he says that it gives him no pain to know that they are to bo swept from the face of tho earth by the Great He looks had con cluded his invocation ho said the answer was favorable and the wind was com ing He askedfrom what quarter it was desired Being told he made a sign and said it wonld be so A moment after the wind came and wafted tho vessel into port This feat made a great impression upon the sailors On the arrival of the vessel in the harbor tho sailors made the medicine man many tempting offers to induce him to teach thorn his magical ceremony for raising a wind Even tne officers were impressed when they saw tho incantations of the old medicine man so promptly followed by the desired breeze ABOUT INDIA X Many of the dances of the Indians and some of these the most popular are medicine dances that is mystery or religious dances They resist being deprived indulgence in these as an effort to takeaway from them their religion or at least to prevent the practice of it New dances are occasionally invented and introduced which are illustraUvp of some tenet of their religious belief and for a time these are all the rage produce among the Indians exactly what among the whites would be spoken of as a religious revival These new dances and religious ideas often have a neat passing from tribe to tribe The ghost dance is not the first religious dance that has passed from tribe to tribe among the Indians and created among them a sort of religions furor There have been a number of such dances No longer ago than 1SS4 such a dance was introduced among the Pottawatomies at Pottawatomie and Great Nomaha agency Kansas In September of that year H C Linn the agent writes There has been intro duced into the Pottawatomie tribe in the past year a system of worship which consists principally of dancing and ex ulting Apart from the superstition and consumption of time spent in those dances the moral tendency is very good as the tearing is in accordance with the Ten Commandments They object to sacrament by the use of intoxicating drink and denounce gambling and horse racing This religion was moon yet ail signify the same The Indians are ready enough to receive really good additions to their religion bur it must them as they can assimilate it them an overdose and they are liable to throw up tho have not the capacity to at once take in the whole scheme of to any Indian a great and universally acknowledged Bible truth and he will at onco say it is good He will subscribe to the Ten Commandments at once if ho is man As for our Indians here they have got some new ideas about the end of the world tho resurrection and the like which they interpret to suit themselves Their prophpt obtained the doctrine h0 teaches when he was a young man Ho was brought at Pino Grove in an Adventist family of the name of Wilson It seems what the Wilsons taught him about coming of the end of the world and the resurrection im pressed him and became a con vert to the doctrine modifying it to suit his notions of what would be just to his people in the rearrangement of the this world by the Great
