RE.VHIXB, Pa., Sspt wreck oc- curred on the Heading road seventeen miles above this place at about o'clock last night. If everything is borne out by subsequent developments, i it is the worst wreck that has ever oc- c'.irrod in this section in tae history of the Reading Railroad Company. The i train which met with disaster loft this city at o'clock, ten minvtos late. It is known as the Pottsvillo express and j running a: the rate of at least forty- j five miles un hour. It had on board probably 125 to 150 passengers, and con- I sisto of an engine, mail aad express j cars and three passenger cars. Above j Shoemakervillo, fifteen miles above this city, there is a curve where the railroad j is about eighteen to twenty feet higher than the Suhuylkill river. Here shortly before six o'clock a freight traia nin I into a coal train, throwing seve.-ai cars in the latter on the opposite track ac.d before the train hands had time to go back to warn any approaching train of the danger, the Potwville express camo around the curve and ran into the wrecked coal cars on its track. The engine went down the embank- ment, followed by the entire train with its human freight. The scene was ona of great horror, and can be better im- agined than described. The cries of the imprisoned passengers wo-o heart- rending. It was a scene never to bo fo-- gotten by who participated and Survived. Some of the passengers man- aged to crawl out of their prison and aroused the neighborhood. Word was telegraphed to this city and help sum- moned, but all information was refuse! at this point by the railroad officials. Physicians and surgeons and a force of 800 worklngmen were taken to the spot and with the aid of a ttaveling electric light plant the work of clear- ing away the wreck was at once pro- ceeded with. Work was slow and tho dead and dying were taken out with great difficulty. Up to ten o'clock last night six dead and some thirty wounded bad been taken out. Of the latter some were brought here and others taken to the Miners' Hospital at Ashland. The dead so far recovered are still on the ground. The dead and wounded taken cut up to this time are as follows: Killed: William D. Shome, Reading, badly mangled; John White, engineer, Pottsville; James Templin, fireman, Pottsville; Harry Logan, conductor, Pottsville; David Augstodt, Mahanoy City, died after being taken from tho wreck; E. W. Logan, baggagomaste.r, Shcnandoah. The injured are: Harrison Riland, Philadelphia, leg broken and Internally hurt; Joseph Southwood. Contralia, badly cut and internally hurt; Jacnes F. Merkle, Bethlehem, badly cut about head and internally hurt; John Thorn- ton, Leosport, badly cut about bead and body, seriously injured; J. Noll, Shenandoab, cut about head and left shoulder broken: Frank R Uoll, man- ager of Frank Mayo's dramatic com- pany, cut head and body; John Carroll, Pt. Glair; Joseph A. It is impossi- ble to get the exact number and the full horror of the situation will not be known for some hours. At five p. m. the wind blew at the rate of miles per hour ancT the f'.irl--d sails were blown out of the gaskets and by p. m. the mizson mast bad gone. Every thing on deck was smashed or carried away and the ship left ia the condition reported above and at the mercy of the waves. The ship labored heavily in the trough of the sea until the wind moderated, when such men its were not injured sot about putting the ship in as good condition as possible. This required throe days and in the meantime the captain attended to the wounded men. BUNKOED. Wealthy Fnrmer fays for Form- ing Hie Acquaintance of Two Sharpers. S-rr.uiui.N-viLLK, 0., Sept 20.--Henry Burns, a wealthy farmer, living IlltCL-n miles from here, was swindled out of last week by sharpers. The men called at his house Thursday with a gripsack containing, as they said, 318..- 000 with which they wantod to purchase land. After making arrangemnnt? to buy Burns' land, they agreed to leave tho money for a few days with him. Saturday they returned and requested Burns to loan them So.OOO. he was amply protected by tho in the satchel, he drew from bank and turned it over to them. On Monday, his suspicions being aroused, bo opened tho satchel and found it, 'M contain wood and paper. Dewey, a real estate broker of thisoity. recently traded 618.000 in minino- stock with James llatcu, of Philadelphia, for 5.500 acres of land in the Northern Peninsula of Michigan. Without look- ing up his property Dowoy disposed of the entire block to diflera-nt parties, and a few days since on a deed being sent to Sault Ste. Mario for registration, it was discovered that the land in question lay miles the shore of Lake Superior un- der about GOO feet of water. The great increase in sales of wool marks a revival in tbat manufacture, and the cotton manufac- tures are alive. The Re- publican State convention on Thursday night elected a now State Executire Committee composed entirely of the Webster-Miller faction and indorsed Thomas Miller's candidacy for Congress from the Seventh district. It was undoubt- edly the sense of tho convention as it is also of the executive committee to nom- inate a State ticket composed entirely of "straight-out" Democrats in opposi- tion to farmer Tillman.
