Rcd plans for major concerns the first meeting of the upper explorer land regional planning commission was held november 16 in Postville the purpose of the meeting was to develop asian of work for the commission for the next two years according to Dave Kudej Rcd coordinator. The major areas of concern identified by the commission Are As Fellows solid waste management housing health facilities Community facilities land use. The commission represents All five county governments and almost All of the 52 City governments in the Region. The Region includes the counties of Alla Makee Clayton Fayette Howard and Winneshiek. Each of the sponsoring units of government has passed a Resolution to join the commission. This is the first time this Type of organization has been developed in Northeast Iowa. Twenty four commission members represent residents of the Region on the basis of population. One member represents the executive Board of the upper explorer land resource conservation and development project. The objective of the commission is to provide a planning capability to solve problems common to the entire area. The commission is in the process of making an application to the office for planning and programming for a full time planning staff. It is hoped that a staff can be located and funded about january 1, 1973. The next meeting is scheduled for november 30 when officers will be elected and the final draft of the annual work program and budget will be reviewed. Local churches to unite in service sunday evening Wendel resigns As county treasurer Art Wendel 66, of Lansing Alla Makee county treasurer for the last 15 years submitted his resignation Friday to the county Board of supervisors. Wendel whose resignation is effective november 30, said he is stepping Down because of health. M. L. Yobs a member of the Board of supervisors was Defeated in his bid for re election november 7, was named to succeed Wendel. Board adopts tentative budget the Postville Board of education at its regular meeting last monday evening adopted a tentative budget for the 1973-1974 school year showing estimated expenditures of $979,530 in the general fund. State Law requires that a preliminary budget be filed with the department of Public instruction not later than december 1, 1972. The amount certified on the preliminary budget does not necessarily mean this amount will be asked in the final budget to be submitted next july the amount that the local school District can raise is limited by Law and this amount will have no effect on the taxation rate for school taxes in the school District. In other action the Board approved the suggestion of John Hyman president of the local teachers association that the pea. Establish a committee to study How the faculty might be reduced in the future to adjust for declining enrolments. The Board in approving this study stated that they would not feel bound to approve such proposed policy but would study any suggestions. Plans were made for Board members and their wives to attend a Tri county Board meeting at Decorah december 14 to hear an outstanding speaker on school Public relations. Plans were also considered to attend the state school Board convention in Des Moines. The superintendent submitted for the Board s information Asur vey of salaries paid superintendents in the state this year. Also a study of enrolment trends in the local school District made by Daryl Bachtell elementary principal was submitted. According to this study total enrolment of the school District would drop from 1066 this school year to 840 in the 1977-1978 school year. The policy on rental books and the collection of rental fees was reviewed but not changed. The superintendent informed the Board that the school would cooperate on november 28 with the county medical association in a diabetes finding clinic local students Isu graduates Thomas a Foels and Thomas b. Plaht were among the 727 students awarded degrees saturday at the annual fall graduation exercises at Iowa state University Ames. Or. Foels received a degree in agronomy and or. Plaht in agricultural business. A joint worship of the three Postville congregations will be held sunday november 26 in the St. Paul lutheran Church at 8 00 . This includes the clergy and members of the Community presbyterian Church St. Bridget Catholic Church and St. Paul lutheran Church and any interested persons.
