For reservations Call 864-3151 Honor Luana Farmers at soil banquet Clifford and Duane Walter of Luana received the 1972 Sweepstake s award for Northeast Iowa for their outstanding soil and water conservation program on their farm at an awards dinner at the country Manor at National thursday nov., 30. Over 50 persons attended the dinner sponsored by the Clayton county soil conservation District honouring regional winners of the Iowa soil conservation achievement awards program this contest is sponsored annually by the Des Moines Register and Tribune. Along with the Walter s farm two other outstanding farms one from Jones county and the other from Dubuque county received regional recognition in this 11-county Northeast Iowa area two teachers one from Black Hawk and one from Jackson county were recognized at this dinner for their work in teaching conservation. Clifford and Duane Walter were each presented a barometer and a wrist watch along with a certificate by Charles Nettles editor of the Iowa farm Register of the Des Moines Register and Tribune. Guest speakers included Wilson Moon state conservation Alist of the u. S. Soil conservation service of Des Moines and Fred Higginbottom assistant director state soil conservation committee Des Moines. The Walter s farm includes a number of conservation practices used to conserve soil and water. The completeness of their total conservation program was the major Factor that gave them the sweepstakes award. Some of the major practices on their 545 acre farm in Wagner township include Over 200 acres Row crop contour Farmed each year As a part of a cropland rotation including use of Meadow used for Hay silage and rotation pastures. On the More rolling Fields Over 26,000 feet of terraces have been built to help control erosion. Grassed Waterways Are used and Over 9,000 feet of tile drainage has been installed. Permanent pastures Are improved windbreaks around farmsteads Are Well maintained. All feed grown on the farm is marketed through livestock Clifford and Duane Market about 250 fed cattle and 1,200 to 1,300 Market hogs each year. Taylor county continues to Lead in the state with 134 per cent of its quota followed closely by Ringgold with 133 and Mills with 126. At the end of the month of october a total of 22 Iowa counties had exceeded their 1972 quota.
