Any Farmer planning on following Corn with Corn in 1972 should consider using one of the recommended Root worm insecticides if he wishes to avoid badly lodged Corn and reduced yields next fall a Large number of Farmers reported severe damage due to Root Worms in 1971, and it will probably be worse in 1972 unless most formers treat their Corn either at planting or cultivation time. Recommended insecticides for planter application include Fura Dan Thiemet by donate Das Amit Moca and Bux 10. Insecticides for cultivator application includes All those for planter application except Moca plus Dazion and Parathion. When applying insecticide with a planter the chemical should be applied at a rate of one Pound actual ingredient per acre. An example would be 10 pounds of a 10 per cent material to equal one Pound actual insecticide. A special planter insecticide attachment is required. The chemical should be applied in a seven Inch band Over the rows and covered lightly with soil. Usually the insecticide is applied behind the planter shoe and just ahead of the press wheel which provides adequate incorporation. It is a Good idea to use wind Shields to prevent blowing of granules by wind. Applicators should be calibrated to make sure they Are applying recommended rates. Cost of Root worm insecticides will Range from about $3.50 to $4 per acre. All of these insecticides Are Short lived and if handled properly will not cause a residue problem in animal products.
