Portage La Prairie Central Plains Herald Leader (Newspaper) - November 8, 2008, Portage La Prairie, ManitobaIn our recent Little trip to see the wind turbines Over the Tiger Hills and far away we came Home the Long Way and found ourselves in Glenboro. It has been a Long time since i visited that pretty Little town. A couple things have changed since i visited there at the wee age of six. Firstly the Banks of the Assiniboine River to the North of town Are not nearly As precipitous Steep and tall As they were Back then. And there is the War memorial right in the Middle of main Street that once had a captured German machine gun on display quite a Marvel for Young eyes. The gun seems to have gone now one wonders when and to where. More souvenirs of course Here in Portage la Prairie we used to have two old German cannons sitting on the City Square one on each Side of the bandstand right behind the Lundy memorial Fountain and the Cenotaph. They were brought Home from the 1914 18 War and taken away for scrap Metal during the 1939 45 conflict. The Cenotaph talking of our precious Stone Soldier who was crafted in Italy he was mounted on a locally built and inscribed base in 1926 after a successful financial Campaign by the Independent order of the daughters of the Empire and the whole Community. The total Cost was $ 2,250, a hefty sum in that Era. It used to sit on the Grassy City Square until it was moved when the site was sold to our Post office in the 1950s. Despite some suggestions it should be moved again elsewhere it now seems firmly located Between the Post office and the Bank of Montreal on Saskatchewan Avenue. The names it is quite a sentimental journey to go in and take a peek at the names on the Cenotaph. There Are a lot of old Portage family names there and most certainly some of the big boys who preceded me in school. Personally thankfully dad and Uncle Wilson came Home from the War to end All wars one with just a shrapnel wound in the leg and the other with Gas scarred lungs. Big brother a two year pow of the second world War brought Home a lot closer the awfulness but i guess the necessity of wars. Momus old scrapbook now is the time to get out this tattered old volume mom so lovingly kept that tells the Story of How her son and other mothers sons went overseas got wounded went missing or died in action. Or daughters maybe. Also there Are accounts of the War Bond drives and who can forget f for Freddie the Mosquito bomber that flew so Low Down our Saskatchewan Avenue and finally crashed while buzzing the Tower at Calgary men and women in uniform talking of the Home front we in Portage la Prairie were right in there with air Force bases at Southport and Macdonald november 8, 2008 Central Plains Herald Leader 5 sunday nov. 9 Bible Baptist Church sunday school 10 a.
