Portage La Prairie Central Plains Herald Leader (Newspaper) - June 21, 2008, Portage La Prairie, ManitobaHere we Are two thirds through june and the longest Day of the year is Here the Equinox they Call it. And some might Call it storm time. The Cyclone of 1922 it was just about now some 86 years ago the Portage Plains and our City were hit by a most dreadful powerful wind. It swept Down from the Northwest taking out everything in its path including the roofs of Many of our tall buildings. Several Grain elevators caught fire and the Knox United now Trinity Church lost its huge roof and its Fine pipe Organ. One Little girl died when the House turned Over. Window Glass and Putty were at a Premium in the hectic Days that followed. mom said now this was All before i was born but one of my momus stories was of How she had my big brother Only three weeks previously. After a stifling hot Day frightening Black Clouds rolled the winds picked up and our East end House started to shudder and creak from their Impact. The cellar windows had been left open to help Cool the House and the trap door in the pantry started to Flap up and Down in a most noisy alarming manner. Clutching her Newborn child in her arms she forbade my dad to go Down and close the windows and it was Brave Uncle George who finally did the deed. Our Only damage was having every window on the West Side of the House broken. About 1936 or so yes that was a hot hot year i recall personally. Little sister had come Down with Scarlet fever on May 24, and our House was quarantined. Dad and big brother went to live Over at a Neighbours House while i stayed Home from school sob sob with mom and my grandparents and the Little girl who had caused it All. Well this storm came up and the old House started to shudder and shake just like mom described it in 1922. The Hydro went off and we lit the kerosene lamps. With dad not there we were All scared. But soon it was Over with no broken windows but a ruined Garden. Lets move on then it was in the mid 1950s, i found myself married owning an old House with several Small children already. They needed a swing so i somehow obtained a couple of old Telephone poles planted them in the ground and joined them with a Rusty Metal pipe. There were not even any ropes or a seat installed when a furious summer storm blew up. We battened Down the hatches and listened to its raging All around our hopefully snug House. After what seemed eternity to us we ventured out to assess any damage. The first thing to meet our eyes was a tremendous tree that had come Down right atop the incomplete swing bending the Rusty pipe Down in the shape of a v. A for Victory be darned. I guess i eventually fixed it and the kids swung on it for years. Weather or not dont Knock the weather. If it did not change once in a while nine out of ten people could not Start a conversation.
