At least 48 hospitalizations have been reported. This bad news for american Tomato producers bodes Well for Wenkai Liu owner of Wenkai Oriental vegetables in Elie. Liu took Between 225 to 270 kilograms of tomatoes to the Market and they completely sold out within 2 1/ 2 hours he said. We sold everything yesterday Liu said on june 15 while tending his specially built greenhouses that allow him to grow vegetables year round. His sellout is quite a different Story from last year when it took two Days to sell that Many tomatoes he noted. June 14 was the first of the seasons Farmers markets and the hot topic among customers was the Salmonella outbreak Down South Liu mentioned. According to Liu customers were saying they buy any tomatoes from the states and were even wary about buying from grocery stores where they be sure of the tomatoes origins. While Liu does sell tomatoes to commercial customers the buyers at the Farmers Market were All individuals buying for their own households he stated. Over at our farm greenhouses Southeast of Portage la Prairie they wont Start Selling tomatoes at Farmers markets until late summer. Right now they sell Over 30 varieties of Tomato plants though. The recent Salmonella outbreak has seen More people test out their Green thumbs said Shea Doherty who works at the greenhouses and whose family owns them. It has caused More people to grow their own now he said. Mass produced tomatoes sometimes genetically altered and sometimes not stored properly Are Likely going to cause trouble Doherty noted. Diseases in the plants can spread much More quickly if they Are produced in mass quantities he explained. It does make a difference to grow your own Doherty advised. The mass Market approach to farming is also cutting Down on the variety of tomatoes offered he lamented As More and More varieties Are becoming More difficult to find. Seed suppliers Are slowly dropping heritage varieties from their catalogues he noted. Heritage varieties Are ones that a vent been modified into hybrids. Customers of the greenhouses appreciate the variety in Tomato plants offered Doherty said. If the Salmonella fears keep up the farms Tomato sales could jump this year he noted. This years Salmonella outbreak is reminiscent for Liu of the e. Coli outbreak in spinach in the United states in 2006.
