An increase in three of the categories occurred from the two month period of 1989 to the same period in 1990. The categories highlighted in the report included homicide rape robbery assault burglary theft and Auto theft. Rape increased from three incidents in january to seven in february. The number also doubled from last year when five rapes were reported in the two month period. Acting police chief James Huebel said he was surprised burglaries Are Down from january and february of 1989 to the same two month period of this year. In january 1989, 161 burglaries were reported with 186 the following month according to the uniform crime report compiled by port Arthur police department officials. In january of 1990, 142 burglaries were reported decreasing to us in february according to the report. Huebel believes at least three fourths of the reported burglaries occurred in residential areas. Fontenot said he expected Atlantic City a violent crimes to outnumber port Arthurs by a wider margin especially considering the millions of tourists attracted to the East coasts Only gambling Mecca. By far the most predominate violent crime reported in port Arthur and Galveston during this period was aggravated assault which involves serious bodily injury to a person or threats of injury with a deadly weapon. Galveston reported 9,390 aggravated assaults while port Arthur had 4,278 and Atlantic City 3,654. However Atlantic City reported More robberies than aggravated assaults a 4,604 compared to 1,164 in port Arthur and 2,301 in Galveston. In a resort City attracting 33.1 million visitors in 1988, its not uncommon to have More robberies than aggravated assaults according to Atlantic City police sgt.
