Progress-Index, The (Newspaper) - July 7, 1961, Petersburg, Virginia Marine Pilot to Present Defense at Court Martial QUANTICO defense presents its side today in the case of a Marine Corps pilot charged with desertion and causing an un necessary search after his T 28 trainer crashed on Marylands Eastern Shore last Jan 3 Capt Ernest C Brace 29 plead ed innocent to the charges as his court martial began here yester day The decorated combat pilot however pleaded guilty to a les ser charge of unauthorized ab sence Defense attorney Edward A Dragon of Washington said that charge was implicit in the others Brace disappeared for 10 days after he crash then surrendered to the FBI in Baltimore The gov ernment had contended that he de liberately planned the crash and disappearance to avoid payment of gambling debts The pilot denied that charge and was acquitted in Federal Court in Baltimore last month of deliber ately destroying the trainer plane Seven prosecution witnesses ap peared yesterday before a six member military court at this Marine base One of the witnesses FBI spe cial agent John C Gardner of Bal imore said Brace surrendered voluntarily to the FBI lie said the pilot told him he hoped his wife would collect from an insurance policy on his life Gardner said Brace told him his wife had not been informed of his plan but he was confident she would do what he
