precinct 2 commissioner candidate Ronald Dockrey were present incumbent precinct 2 commissioner Maxie Wofford was absent the questions ranged from the current tax rate Homestead exemptions Road conditions and county sales taxes the precinct 4 candidates took the microphones first and were asked if the county tax rate is too Low too High or just right to adequately serve the county needs answering first Wheeler said when i took Over in 1979 the tax rate was 37 cents on valuations now its 45 cents on a valuation by mandate we had to raise it three percent to work Over the jail i think half men that approximately comes off for salary 1 think they can be improved but we have 261 Miles to keep up with that 125 Miles of Oil Road is hard to keep up we Haven had the Money to recoil we just have to keep Patching Easterwood said 1 personally feel like the biggest problem we have with our county roads right now is our ditches the water runs Down our roads instead of our Dit Ches without some form of drainage i dont see How can improve our Road when asked what Aid the county could offer the 9 000 or so residents who will be without commodities during the four months after the is a county sales tax and the commissioners have been trying to get a sales tax for the last 20 years know if we could get a one cent Emiliy sales tax we could lower our and Valorme tax in the said such a sales tax Ronald Dockrey would require statutory changes through the legislature concerning a minimum Security jail for the county Easterwood said a minimum Security jail would be about the Only thing that you could go to right now with the system set up like it Wheeler said we have All that Money to pay Back that we sold Bonds for to rework this jail 1 think it could be worked when asked if they approved or disapproved of the county participation in a consolidated tax col Lection unit administered by the appraisal District Easterwood said he answer because he was not too Well versed on these taxes that everybody interested Wheeler said he approved i think it would save Money we have to pay so much on that tax appraisal Board and i think it would improve the condition of the taxes in the Dockrey answered those same questions As Well a few others when asked if he supported a new jail for the county he said the old courthouse was built in the Wagon and mule Days and its possibly the Best Structure in Paris but its maybe not the Best Struc Ture for a jail you have to take into consideration that there Are people who work in the courthouse and safety is involved in not saying that the Law enforcement Doest take care of the situation in jus saying that it should be t consideration i say in for a new jail t really am saying that the people need to dictate what scr of
