If i were Lucky enough Towin a lottery would i have to give the Money to the govern ment in payment for the checks i got in the past or do i just pay taxes on the winnings a you just pay the taxes. This is due to the fact that social Security benefits Are paid to people regardless of what their other assets May be. You owe the government nothing nor will you benefits be reduced because in the Case you describe unearned income such As a lottery winning or interest from savings is not consid ered in determining social Security benefits. However for those getting state welfare checks or supplemental Security income paid through the social Security Agency to older people whose assets and income Are below a special level the answer would be these cases lottery winners would probably not be eligible for any further ssi or state checks because the Cash prize would increase their assets to the Point where they would no longer Quality for benefits. Money watch by Carol Mathews but there is no requirement that past ssi benefits or state welfare payments be repaid though there have been experiments with the latter in the past. Q i get periodic reports from my brokerage firm updating me on the status of the stocks which it follows. I own some of the stocks they review and recently the firm changed its recommendation on one of my stocks from buy to am not Happy about this downgrading of their opinion of my Stock and wonder should i sell i now a probably so if you have a profit and feel that your brokerage firm has had a Good track record in the past in spotting trouble at a company before i becomes obvious to the general Public. In fact it is Good to keep in mind that brokerage firms Are incurable optimists and their analysts Are under a Good Deal of pressure to put the bes face possible on the Outlook for a Stock that has been previously recommended by the Many cases the downgrading of a Stock recommendation from buy to hold is a Short hand system used by Wall Street analysts to indicate to investors that in their opinion the time has come to sell the Are frequently held Back from making an outright sell recommendation by the perennial Best foot Forward attitude of their Bosses at the brokerage reluctance of a brokerage firm to Issue a sell recommendation on any Stock for fear of damaging a relationship with the company that has issued the latter consideration is due to the fact that brokerage firms not Only sell Stock to the Public but also serve As advisers in Many cases to the companies whose Stock they sell to the than damage that second relationship they will often slight the first the one they have with their retail clients.
