Now that i am near to retiring i am told that i will not receive the full social Security Benefit due me from my second Job be cause of the new Law that saved social Security. Is this True a yes. The new Law applies to those who work in non covered jobs . Federal jobs most state and local government jobs and work at most non profit organizations. Work at a second Job with social Security coverage. Are entitled to first Job in your government. The Law says that starting Jan. 1, 1985, social Security benefits paid to these people will be reduced to take into account the pension paid by the government or any other employer that is Money watch by receive a pension from the Case from the Federal Carol Mathews not a member of the social Security system. The formula for reducing your social secur Ity Benefit is too Complex for me to outline Here. But the maximum reduction of social secur Ity benefits cannot exceed half the amount of the civil service or private pension that you will receive. Q my brother left me $60,000 and i have no idea How to invest it. I am 52, earn $22,000 a year and at present do not qualify for a pension where i work. I have no savings though i recently took out a $100,000 life insurance policy so that i can leave Money to my three unmarried sons who Are 27,25 and 23. My goal is retirement income with the bes inheritance i can leave for my sons. How do you recommend i go about meeting these goals a the Best inheritance you can leave your sons is the ability to support yourself while you Are alive. Right now the $60,000 inheritance combined with no other savings and the possibility of no pension income Means that you Are very Likely to be in financial trouble later in your life and will have to Call on your sons for financial help just at the time they will be raising families of their own and have Little with which to help you. As a result since your sons Are grown have already completed College and Are Able to work there is no need for you to have such an expensive life insurance policy. Instead the Money spent for the insurance premiums should be used to build up your own financial assets. As for investing the $60,000, consider putting $10,000 into a Ivy year Bank certificate which were recently paying close to 10 percent. Put $30,000 into a Mutual fund that invests i stocks. Leave $5,000 in a Money Market account at a Bank. These accounts currently pay about 8 percent and you can remove the Money at any time to meet financial emergencies. The remaining $15,000 should probably be invested in Treasury securities because they Are extremely Safe and Are currently paying a rate of 10 percent. .
