Barnett wanted Tolose some weight. It started out As just a weight program noted Barnett a staff sergeant with 19th support command s personnel Section. Then the former support command boxing coach Chuck Hazel came Over to me one Day and told me if i wanted to lose weight he could do it for me recounted Barnett whose wife and 8-year-old daughter supported him from stateside when retold them. It was just a three week thing to lose the three week thing was a grueling training Camp Hazel ran to prepare his fighters for the championship tourney. It was modelled after the olympic training Camp in Colorado Springs colo., Hazel visited earlier this year. We trained three times a ran about three Miles in the morning and did some exercises an wind sprints. Then at 10 . We did some exercises designed to tear your body apart. I Felt like every Bone every muscle in my body was going to fall off. In the afternoon we had sparring noted Barnett. Barnett lost the weight dropping from 155pounds at the outset of the Camp to a slim 131 pounds for the championships july 14. I was losing a Pound or two every Day he noted. When i started out i was. Shooting for 145 pounds but got All the Way Down to 131, which is just about what i weighed when i came in Barnett admitted however that the grueling regimen was almost More than he could handle at first. All my friends my age kept saying you can fight it s stupid to go in there with a Young Guy " he related. Those first couple of Days i almost gave in. I Felt terrible and thought to myself i m too old for Usa spec. 5 Joe Ferrar Barnett left slips an opponent s Jab and prepares to deliver a blow of his own. This which is exactly what everyone else but the hard work began to pay off and soon he was looking Forward to fight night. Once i got into shape i did want to fight. I did t want to lose the weight and just let it go at that. As the training Camp progressed i got so i Felt i could hold my own. I got to where i could keep up with the rest of the Guys in the exercises and i figured i could keep up with them in the ring too said Barnett. Hazel and the freq enters of a local night spot gave Barnett the will to turn that budding Confidence into a hard fought three round Deci Sion. Actually Only Hazel and the people at the Wang Kwan club were positive about it. They thought it was a great idea and told me to go for the night of the fight with the night spot practically closed Down so they could come and see me fight Barnett showed up with the name of the club and his nickname Momo printed on the Back of his shirt to the fans Delight. He had a big "35" printed on the front to let everyone know visage. He faced Rubin Olavarria another Taegu fighter but the crowd was firmly in Momo a Corner As was coach Hazel whom Barnett credits wit teaching him to win. The difference in the fight was where coach Hazel sat Barnett stated flatly. If he d have been in the other Corner the fight would have come out differently. He was the one who said you can do it you can do it All the Way up to the following the fight plan of Hazel who dubbed Barnett the team s senior citizen Barnett fought Ahard first two rounds. But he knew exactly when i d run out of Gas my legs would t hold me up and i could t keep my arms up. But that was the plan for the third round to keep away from him and Clinch when we got close. Everything worked out though he was nearly out on his feet the last minute of the round Barnett Hung on to finish the fight his main goal. When declared the Winner Barnett along with the full House in attendance went wild. A few Days after the fight still flushed with Victory when the subject comes up Barnett had a few reminders of the fight. I got Cut on the Bridge of my nose when we bumped Heads in the first round and my arms and legs were sore for a while he noted. But this was a once in a lifetime thing. I be got no desire to go Back and do anything like it Ever again. I absolutely enjoyed it. No Friendship Day festival to be held sept. 17 Pusan Usa the City of Pusan will observe the Lith korean Amer ican Friendship Day on sept. 17 by holding special joint activities. They include basketball and Bowling games a display of children s Art a reception awards presentation musical performance As Well As a Freedom run. Basketball and Bowling games will be held Between . Military and a korean team at 2 . At Hialeah gymnasium. Mayor Choi Jongho of Pusan and col. Raymond j. Morin jr., commander of . Army Garri son Pusan Are scheduled to Cut a ribbon at 6 30 . At the Pusan officers club opening a three Day display of korean and american children s Art. A reception will then be held at the club to Honor 200 guests. Three outstanding american soldiers and three koreans will receive awards from Choi and Morin during the reception. Other highlights of the reception will be presentation of trophies to basketball and Bowling team captains. Korean and american musical performance will be also part of the reception. Eleven korean and american run ners will participate in the Freedom run. They will Start off at 4 . Sept. 15 from Hialeah compound of . Army Garrison Pusan and reach the Freedom Village at Panmunjom Between 8 and 10 . Sept. 17 after about 38 hours of continuous running. The relay run will cover about 340 Miles of Korea s Freedom Road which Allied forces traversed in 1950 in their successful March to North Korea. The route links Pusan Taegu Taejon Osan and Seoul with the Freedom Village. Runners will change every five Miles with each runner to cover about 35 Miles. Three major City Parks including Taejon Dai Sung i and bomb Temple will be open free of Cost to All american citizens and their guests on sept. 17 and 18. The Friendship Day was established 11 years ago by the korean american Friendship Council in Pusan in commemoration of the first Landing of the . 6th infantry division in Korea through the port City of Pusan on sept. 17, 1945, right after Korea s liberation from japanese colonial Rule.
