Pacific Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - September 4, 1983, Tokyo, JapanSunday september 4, 1983 3? 3 Tiff Fri it Pacific stars and stripes 17 Pacific sunday / music country / Jack Hurst Earl Thomas Conley crossover to mainstream Rock one recent night after he headlined a show for a mostly Young crowd of 35,000 in Toronto and the night before he opened for Hank Wil Liams or. In front of other thousands of under-30 zealots Earl Thomas Conley played a traditional country and Blue grass venue in new York state. He did so with trepidation. It was kind of a resort where older people came he recalls and the Guy who ran the place was freaking out Over the Bluegrass bands that were there saying they were too loud. I started to get real paranoid. I thought what s Gonna happen when we go out there i m backstage and the band goes out to do four numbers. The drummer s kicking out and it sounds like shotguns going off every time he hits that snare drum. Here comes the Guy who runs the place. Me and Jimmy the Guy who Kinda escorts me around we busted out laughing because that s the Only thing you can do in a situation like that. I headed for the nearest restroom and laughed til i went on. Cc1 Well the people loved us. By the time we got through the audience had loved everything we did. I got out there and signed autographs and there were old ladies maybe 80 Yards old who were telling me How much they loved it. So you never can Conley 41, is a performer in transition. Having begun his songwriting and recording career in a very traditional vein writing hits for Conway Twitty this time i be Hurt her More than she loves me and the late Mel Street Smoky Mountain memories he has moved across the Center of country music s spectrum into its Rock and pop hybrids. He has made this move gradually steadily and smoothly. Evidence is his recent fourth no. 1 single your love s on the line which is the first release from the new up Don t make it easy for me Ria. Born in a Rural hollow in a part of Ohio that is very nearly Kentucky Conley was reared in poverty but encouraged toward artistic pursuits by his Mother. That made him feel like an outsider which caused him to study himself and his surroundings All the More. His songwriting naturally benefited. Most of the songs on his new album Are Conley performer in transition contemporary style lyrics co written with Randy Scruggs the Brilliant Young son of Banjo virtuoso Earl Scruggs. Conley turned to Scruggs because he wanted to write most of the songs on his album As he had done with his previous ones but he did t have the time to do All of it by himself. Observing that he does t want what i write to be filled up with somebody else s ideas Conley says Scruggs is virtually the Only co creator with whom he cares to share his creative self on a sustained basis. He says he met Scruggs about three years ago when Conley and producer Nelson Larkin moved to Scruggs sound studio after they tired of another Nashville studio they had been using. They used Young Scruggs As a sideman on guitar and other instruments and it quickly became obvious that he identified with Conley s music and approach. With just three months to write and record an album Conley invited Scruggs Over to his House on several evenings. He recalls that Scruggs would usually arrive around 7 30 . And that they would be prepared to work until 5 or 6 in the six out of seven nights they met like this they wrote a song. A Day or two after they finished each one they would take it to the studio and record it so that Conley says there was no loss of Energy Between the writing and the recording. On Don t make it easy for me the album s title Cut we sat Down and i said we have got to go to an extreme Here and do something almost country Punk or bubblegum Rock because otherwise we re not Gonna have enough variety and the album will be too Mellow he said Well what about this and came up with that Melody almost Conley notes that to write Don t make it easy for me and your love s on the line he and Scruggs moved to the Kitchen from the bedroom where Conley does much of his songwriting. He says it is sometimes harder to be in a musically energetic mood in the bedroom which he has specially decorated intellectual and romantic and All this stuff to put him in a writing mood. One of several dedications on the current album is to Sandra Conley s wife of Many where Sandra goes when he is writing in the bedroom he says she sits there with me a lot of the time when i m writing by myself. Even when i was writing with Randy she was still around the House somewhere. There s been a few lines on the songs that she s contributed to but mostly it s just inspiration. It helps my music to still come from a family orientation. Otherwise i d think i would be too much of a performer not serious enough to be Good he chuckles. It keeps me out of trouble Headds.
