Pacific Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - January 12, 1983, Tokyo, JapanPacific stars and stripes Okinawa wednesday january 12, 1983 raiders capture title from eagles by Danny Layne ps8.s Okinawa Bureau chief amp Courtney just when the Kadena eagles thought they would become the intramural football Cinderella team the Hansen raiders turned into the ugly Stepmother who took the Ball the game and the championship away from the air Force opponents with a 34-28 come from behind Victory Here Jan. 2. Coach Dick Lee s eagles held at one Point inthe game a 28-6 Lead but watched in dismay As it and their Hopes of winning the Okinawa superbowl dwindled into a last minute loss. The raiders entered the game As the league Sonly undefeated team but the second place eagles weren t impressed with Hansen s 14-0record. In fact they were downright rude in front of nearly 2,500 spectators As they unmercifully began beating the first place raiders at the game they played won the pregame Coin toss and elected to receive Rex Walters opening Kickoff. A clip nullified the 30-Yard Lunback and Kadena was forced to begin their assault on the championship from their own 15-Yard-line. Two running plays netted them Only one Yard so quarterback Jim Blaylock did what he does Best throw the football. Bulling his Way he tossed a 59-Yard pass to tailback Jake Williams who was finally hauled Down from behind by a defender at the six. Fullback Bob Broglie finished the Job Williams started by bulling his Way into the end zone on the next play. The conversion extra Point failed but the eagles had an Early 6-0 Lead. Hansen began their quest for the Island football title on their own 8-Yard-line following a Short 3-Yard return on the ensuing Kickoff. The drive s third play again proved to be the key one but it was t exactly As Hansen planned it to quarterback Alvin Brown substituting for the injured James Edgehill began his Drosback from the 11 and had the Ball dislodged from his grasp by Kadena s Carl kept the eagles from getting another touchdown As he alertly pounced on the Loose Ballin the end zone. He gave up however a safety and two More s fans seemed to nervously twitch in their seats As the raiders suddenly found themselves behind 8-0 and having to give up Heball to the keyed up eagles once More. Otis halves set the stage for Kadena s third score Ashe returned Hansen s Kickoff to the 21. A screen pass Cost the eagles three Yards but Brogli gained that and More Back on two consecutive running plays. His runs of 15 and six Yard brought Kadena to Midfield and Blaylock validated his reputation As the Island s bes throwing quarterback. He chucked a perfect pass to halves who had beat one on one defensive coverage in mid stride and the Fleet footed end raced in for the touchdown. The Eagle connected on the extra Point and their team and fans were ecstatic about the 16-0 score. Excellent Field position Hansen managed excellent Field position Onchuck Bellamy s 33-Yard Kickoff return and it Only took two plays for them to Man Euver into scoring position. Bellamy picked up four Yards on the drive s first play and Mark Jones burst Over left tackle for 36 More bringing the scoreless raiders to the seven. A five Yard penalty moved the raiders Back to the 12, but Bellamy carried several defenders into the end zone when he scored Hansen s first touchdown of the Day. The raiders were denied the extra Point and trailed 16-6 late in the first s one Yard plunge Early in the second period capped a nine play Kadena drive which began Back at their own 22. Two Blaylock passes to Williams netted them 39 Yards in the drive which was also aided by a pass interference Call against Pat Austin Hansen s cornerback in the end zone. The miscue set up Broglie s dive but the Raider defense stiffened enough to Kee Kadena from tacking on the extra Point. However Hansen s Peter Kyles 24 nearly picks off a by Kadena s Mac Mckee 77 during action a Jim Blaylock pass but has the Ball stripped away Camp Courtney. Ass Danny Layne the eagles held a dominating 22-6 failed to score on their series of plays except for Jones 64-Yard run which was nullified by a controversial illegal blocking penalty. A relatively Short punt put Kadena in mediocre Fiel position but they still seized the Opportunity to increase their again found halves open and drilled another pass which resulted in Kadena s fourth touchdown shortly before half time. The raiders had been behind in other games before coach Dan Cross recalled later but this 22-Point deficit was the biggest they d faced All year. It was Austin who had been nabbed for the costly interference play earlier in the game who provided the spark which ignited Hansen s fire. Hansen used six plays including Willie Thomas 16-Yard sprint Jones 26-Yard scamper and a face masking penalty to get to Kadena Doorstep. Jones powered his Way in from the four but Hansen still could t Muster an extra Point conversion and trailed 28-12 at the half. Obviously Cross inspired or encouraged his players during the halftime break for they appeared somewhat different in the game second half. Although it was t noticeable in their first Possession of the third Quarter since the turned the Ball Back to their opponents after Only four plays. It looked like another eagles scoring drive As they moved from the 38 to the 22, but that s where the game turned completely around for both was Austin who had been nabbed for the costly interference play earlier in the game who provided the spark which ignited Hansen s fire. He snatched a Blaylock Aerial at the16-Yard-line on a third Down play and raced unmolested 64 Yards the opposite Way for Hansen touchdown. The raiders finally managed to tally two Points on the conversion play and narrowed the Kadena Lead 28-20. The eagles next drive stalled at Midfield when Austin batted Down Blaylock s third Down pass. When Kadena s punter received the snap from enter it was also Austin who pressured the kicker with a fierce Rush and forced an angling9-Yard punt that went out of Bounds. Hansen took Possession and faced a third-and-19 situation before Edgehill who entered the game earlier despite an injured shoulder threw a touchdown pass to Roberts cheer. It was Only Edgehill s second pass of the Day and it took Scheer s acrobatic Over the shoulder catch to make the play a Success. Edgehill faked a Handoff on the conversion and walked into the end zone to add the crucial two Point play and knot the game at28-28. Hansen was t quite through though As a Short on Side kick which the raiders recovered at Kadena s 35.they began a drive that petered out at the 23 and instead of attempting a go ahead Field goal Cross raiders ran for the first Down but did t succeed. Kadena could t make any headway either on their series and returned the Ball to Hansen at the 39-Yard-line.despite a 10-Yard run by Thomas Hansen once again faced a fourth Down and Short yardage play and the raiders again opted to go for the first May not believe it Cross later confided but we had the kicker we just did t have the kick ing s defense again denied Hansen the first Down and assumed control of the Ball at their own 23 with slightly More than two minutes left in the game. The air Force players were forced Back to the 3-Yard-line before a draw play gave them some breathing room to the 14. Blaylock assumed the punting chores and booted a 26-Yard punt that Aaron Grain scooped up and returned to the 20.Thomas ran four Yards on the first play but it was Edgehill who moved Hansen near the Goa line with an 8-Yard dash to the eight. Bellamy put the raiders on top when he powered his Way tothe three before vaulting into the end zone for the go ahead touchdown with Only 48 second remaining in the game. The conversion attempt failed but Hansen really did t need it and Wenton to win 34-28. Pacific stars and stripes depends largely on Public affairs offices for contributions to this Page.
