sports writer Kunsan South Korea shooting guard Earnest most valuable player of last Pacific air forces mens basketball tournament with 126 Points in four once pitted his scoring sparkle against current los Angeles lakers Ace guard Earvin magic Johnson As High school rivals in Johnson won the individual scoring Battle against Matthews in a 1977 Michigan High school Allstar but the Matthews led Saginaw squad downed the Cream of the crop of Cross state rival from where Johnson even As a Johnson was Awe Matthews since that High school one of pro basketballs play making led his collegiate Alma mater Michigan state to a National title plus two Aba crowns As a pro with the he was awesome he was awesome in High in fact maybe better than he is Matthews he could do just about anything he wanted to do on the basketball Between work As an army private assigned As a clerk with the 78th ordnance detachment and time spent on local Cage courts working on his own Matthews still finds time to follow he recalls the summer he almost joined the Michigan state spartans squad that topped Indiana state for the Mcaa championship in i practice with the Michigan state team in the summer of 1978 after a year at Ferris Matthews the coach was interested in me but i really didst want to sit out a year to that meant watching Jay Greg Kelser and the rest of the spartans on to in the Spring of when Michigan state bested Larry Bird and the Indiana state sycamores in College basketballs version of the super different basketball roads while the magic Man prospered under the National sports with lucrative offers coming from pro teams even in his Sophomore Matthews was struggling through stints at two Small Michigan Johnson eventually left Michigan state two years before graduation to find Fame and Fortune million Over 25 years Worth on the West a decision Matthews supports he did what he had to Matthews he can always go Back and get that As Long As he can play the Guy wont be hurting for Matthews left school As Well for the exact opposite hard family Earnest Matthews Harold China problems and Low Cash resources led him into the i didst get the some Guys get the he i had my chances in College and i Kinda messed it i started off in High i didst go to didst get Good like my father always told so i had to Start off in a Small Matthews maybe if i did what my dad said and had gone to a bigger i might have had an Opportunity to go for Matthews is Content to stay with the mainly because it gives him a sports personality Chance to increase his court and because he gets a in not looking toward College because they cant pay i need the Money i came in the army basically to play Matthews it was my goal All my life to make i always thought i people always go try go try its really not that it takes Money to go wherever youre trying to get plus you have to stay and if you dont have anybody backing its Gonna be hard on age plays a Factor As he at he Doest think As avidly about playing in College or the pros As younger players might so he emulates a lifestyle similar to that of older As he put Matthews feels he was gifted from youth with the tools of the basketball he played on fifth Grade squads while in fourth he because he was taller than the rest of the and he would not practice much on his own preferring to keep practice confined to his coaches much of the skills he possessed came from his a he from the he had Good potential As a though he dropped out of school and didst go to Matthews i mostly inherited the game from my he was pretty Good and still is the younger Matthews began playing seriously in fourth when i was i used to play i was playing for the fifth Grade but i was taller than i would usually shoot a Hook he As i got i had coaches who helped me thought i had kept me of i like the game i guess i was just born with that All i can coach changed playing style the outside shot he worked to perfection at last weeks Acaf tournament used to come from behind acis until his seventh Grade coach had Matthews change his he used to Tell that aint no he told me to keep it in so after that i practice keeping it above my and i guess it became a i guess i have a Good Matthews i didst really practice on it just came with if id really worked on like most i might have been a Little but that one thing i didst the Only time i practice was at i didst work on it in my spare after joining the Matthews trained at fort then arrived at the 32man 78th detachment in november and soon became a court an army private playing air Force basketball regulations permit at the Yokota invitational Christmas tournament two months Matthews averaged 25 Points in five games As the Kunsan Wolf pack roared to the tourney title unbeaten in five he came off a leg injury to sparkle in averaging per it had been a but my jump shot started to come Back during the Christmas Tournai he the december tournament was important for me to get that touch though selected map in the Acaf Matthews As an army Man was unable to Advance with the Acaf Al stars to the air Force tourney at Kirtland but not without Matthews Felt he could have gotten attention from College scouts who sometimes attend interservice championship Competition to spot new i like to and that what i intend to do for As Long As i stay in the Matthews when i go Back to the ill be on an army then i can go a Little Evans Hurt by red sox asks for Trade Boston a Veteran slugger Dwight Evans of the Boston red sox asked to be traded but got a Cool response after fueling reports of a wide rift did not want to make any Lon term commit Evans i was advised that it might be in my Best interest to wait and see what Evans i dont think its fair to ask me to Evans also didst like the clubs reported offer of for for 1986 and in they made one proposal and didst Budge from Evans i realize now that the club is not serious in wanting to keep Treyve shown me there not in even though i and my family love new England and i had hoped to finish my career in in asking to be traded to a who has played three seasons on a million said he was willing to sacrifice some of his Market he said he sought an
