A slate of activities are planned lo cally for Walla Walla Substance Abuse Awareness Week, with events beginning Friday and running through next week. The celebration coincides with the statewide 1993 Drug-Free Washing ton Week. Local events will include school presentations, drug-free par ties, a fun run and athletic events. The following is a list of local activities: Friday A “Rock Roll Tribute to Youth in America” will be presented to Pioneer Middle School students at 1:30 p.m. by state Sen. Brad Owens, D-Shelton. The program uses music to cover substance abuse issues. Sunday An ice skating and pizza party will be held for Waitsburg and Sager middle school students from 4 to 7 p.m. at the YWCA ice chalet. Monday Runners will gather at the Walla Walla County Courthouse to carry proclamations back to their businesses and schools. Anyone from a business or school can participate in the run, which begins 7:15 a.m. The procla mations will declare Substance Abuse Aware ness Week. The Walla Walla Elk’s Lodge Drug Pre vention Display will be at Garrison Middle School all day. Lager Middle School will have Olympic games from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday The Tri-Cities Teen Theatre will present two assemblies to the Waitsburg junior and senior high school students. Pioneer Middle School will have Wild Hair Day, a fun theme day where students will do strange and unusual things with their hair. Wednesday Leonard Olguin, a professor from the De partment of Teacher Education at California State University at Long Beach, will discuss cultural diversity at a luncheon at the Walla Walla Elks Lodge. The Sixth Annual Substance Abuse Task Force Community Luncheon and Awards Presentation will run from 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Call Peggy Needham at 527-3278 for reservations. Walla Walla High School will have a student health fair throughout the day. The Walla Walla Police Department will chal lenge the Seattle Seahawks in basketball at 7 p.m. in Sherwood Center. Ticket prices are: adults, $5; students, $4; children, $3; and fam ilies, $10. Tickets are available at Channel 3 Video, Book Game Co., Whitman College Bookstore, Walla Walla Community College Bookstore and PDQ Food Mart. Thursday Lots of speakers and an inexpensive dinner will be offered by the Blue Ridge Elementary School and Parent Teacher Association from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. A lasagna dinner with salad, French bread, dessert and drinks will cost 50 cents per person, $2 per family. Dinner will be served from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., and free child care will run from 6 to 8:30 p.m. HIV and AIDS will be discussed by Mary Atteberry, Sharyl Dill and Miguel Acevedo from 6 to 7 p.m. The presentation will be in both English and Spanish. At 7:15, Nancy Mc Clenny-Walters will talk about how her family was affected by a fatal, alcohol-related traffic accident. Walla Walla Police officers Doug Stender and Matt Wood then will discuss what parents need to know about gang activity in Walla Walla. Friday, April 2 Garrison Middle School will have a 3-mile walk in honor of Drug-Free Washington Week. Lager Middle School will have a drug-free walk and picnic in Lions Park. Youth to Youth will have a dance at Wait sburg High School from 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday, April . The annual DARE Superstars event will be at 10:30 a.m. at Wa-Hi. Activities are open to stu dents in grades three to eight.
