CARDINAL AT ABINGDONPrelate Confirm* Large Cl am In St.Francis De Sale* Church.[Special Dispatch to the Baltimore Sun.]Abingdon, Md., May 7.—Cardinal Gibbons was given a hearty welcome here thisafternoon, when he arrived from Baltimore to confirm a large class at St Francis de Sales’ Catholic Church.Accompanied by Rev. John M. McNamara. pastor of the church, and Revs. William M. Clements, pastor of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church, and Joseph Ziegler. of Loyola College, Baltimore, the Cardinal left the archlepiseoptl residence in the automobile of Mrs. A. O. Kirkland In the morning and, after a pleasant trip, arrived here at 3 o’clock.Vested In his pontifical robes, he entered the church, where the 65 persons to be confirmed and hundreds of the parishioners were assembled. In an address he emphasized the necessity of leading a holy life and urged those present to become workers for both their material and spiritual good.In- conferring the sacrament he was assisted by Fathers McNamara, Clements and Ziegler. Messrs. Edward Dietrich and Thomas Green acted as sponsors for the males confirmed, and Mrs. Edward Dietrich and Mrs. John Kahoe for the girls and women.After the ceremony the Cardinal held an informal reception, at which he was Introduced to every one present, speakingkind words and giving advice to each. The priests then left for Father McNamara’s home at Bradshaw, where the Cardinal remained tonight.Tomorrow morning the Cardinal will preside at the high mass at St. Stephens’ Catholic Church at Bradshaw*. He will also preach. After the mass he will confirm a large class and will 4eave in theafternoon for Baltimore.
