set up at the top of the Marin tower This will be itilizcd in dismantling the creeper in the erection of the topmost mortal brace that will lie the lower egs together Assembly of the cable saddles constitutes one of the most interest ing phases of Ihe entire construction project Each saddle is mounted on 3t rollers B inches in diameter and weighing 1700 pounds each These in turn rest on heavy the bridge were put in place their weight upon the cables again returned the towers to their original vertical position But in larger bridges this method of procedure became impractical and the new method of surmounting the cable saddles on rollers was dc vised CABLING FLOORING As Ihc saddles on the Marin lower now stand they are off center and will remain so until the cables have been spun and and accepted This wire if welded into a single strand and strelched Inut would exlend a distance of 38000 miles On the soulh pier the pouring of concrete to bring the first lift of the pier base to its final elevation of 35 feet below water level was scheduled for completion today POUR TIER BASE The concrete pier base has been poured in seven interlocking units or sections reinforced with mats ot steel Preparations are now under way for the unwatering of the fender enclosure which will be fol lowed immediately by the erection of wooden forms so that the greal concerele structure may be carried lo completion 40 feet above water level In the Eastern shops and mills production of rolled steel for the Sim Francisco lower has been speeded up and Chief Engineer Strauss reports that the material is being shipped to the fabrication plants at the rate of HOO tons a veek The final lot of cable an horage eyebars has been rolled and iispeclcd at the mills Meanwhile work on the Presidio SEEK By CHARLES P NUTTER WASHINGTON Nov Argentina an authoritative source today is next on the list of new world nations with which the United States will slart negotiations for a giveandtake trade treaty The talks may begin early in Jan uary The Government is now conduct ing negotiations with a dozen nations under powers given Presi dent Roosevelt to raise or lower tariffs by as much as 50 per cent in reaching trade agreements The Brazilian treaty is now ap proaching the drafting stage The Colombian treaty has been finished and its announcement awaits only completion of flic Brazilian act Treaties with the smaller countries arc expected tn follow swiftly A treaty with Cuba already is in ef fect and officials say if has in creased trade mcasureably In dealing with these countries the United States has the ad vantage of an unfavorable trade balance and productson the free list to use in bargaining With Argentina the reverse is true Most of her exportable goods are com petitive with
