Oakland Tribune (Newspaper) - December 17, 1971, Oakland, California British drop Ollar support Bank us shakeup Dpi climbs 2.41 in a late comeback William Doyle r 3 office party picture mixed by Doyle tribe financial editor christinas office parties those Semi social vents which have provoked As Many family arguments As they have provided enjoyable times have apparently survived the economic downturn in most places around the country but the picture is a mixed i Jone in the East Bay. The administrative management society conducted a Survey of office parties in 1967 and repeated the Effort this year. The Survey shows that the number of parties was Down 1 per cent this year with 68 per cent of the firms contacted saying they planned a party. Of those who did t plan one 61 per cent had previously had parties but decided not to this year. Harold Bloom manager for Goodman a the Oakland catering firm at Jack Lon Don Square cast some Light on Why. There s no question that the depressed Economy has been a Factor in Busi Ness spending for parties. Our business is probably Down 25 to 30 per cent on parties paid for completely by the said Bloom. There has been an increase however in parties where the firms subsidize a part of the Cost and employee associations or individual workers pay the remainder. This is in line with National figures which show that a Quarter of the parties now fall in that category compared with 14 per cent four years ago. Bloom said one Type of party has completely Dis appeared As far As Goodman s is concerned. We Don t even get any calms about them any that is the party held in the office to which the caterer brought food and drink. Too Many people got in trouble at Home after said Bloom. Driving afterwards a problem the management society said too that concern Over employees driving Home after imbibing too freely of alcoholic beverages at work and the Strain on relationships on the office after parties were also factors. The tendency toward serving alcoholic beverages is growing too with 74 per cent of those who planned parties this year going to serve alcohol compared with 67-per cent four years ago. Eleanor Falconer manager of Rod s catering in said her concern s business is As Good As usual and maybe a Little better. She said some parties Are being held in the office or Plant but that Many More Are held outside the of fice. When they Are on the premises they Are generally lunches but when they Are off we Are catering Pri Marily dinner dances in the she said. The Rod s manager said there have been some increases in Price from a year ago but that most customers have gone along with that and maintained the same Quality of event. A spokesman for Frere Jacques catering in Oak parties at which his company does a full catering Job have been off substantially in the last two years. A different situation he said however contrary to the National Pat Tern there has been an increase in delivery of hours d oeuvres to office and Plant locations. We Are having about the same number of Busi Ness contacts but the companies Are buying less expensive he said. Spokesmen for two or three catering firms told of parties that were scheduled Early in the year by companies and then cancelled when the Economy failed to improve. In each instance employee groups or individual employees went ahead and rescheduled the event at their own expense or with a minor subsidy from the firm. It looks like people just like to party.
