From oar regular Correa pendent a senator Hoail a deep Laid scheme t a secure some political capital by having a Senate commie inv i Gitte the .arge embezzlement alleged to have been committed by senator to Cli North Dakota foil ten fifteen years ago has come t grief. In fact it is dead. It was killed by a democratic caucus senators which adopted a Resolution against making auf investigation into the career senators be fore they became such. In the ? Ion in the executive session held before the caucus As Well As in the caucus democratic senators made Strong arguments against the right the Senate to make such investigations. They held that As the authority to create a senator rested alone with the state so the authority to go into a senators private past rested alone with the state and that the election a Man to the i. Senate by a state legislature was a sufficient certificate his Good character for the Senate. Had it not been for the Chagrin Felt by republicans at it the election a Democrat to the Senate by the Republican legislature North Dakota this investigation never would have been proposed. President Cleveland has notified a Senate committee that he will Send the last nominations upon which he Wisnes immediate action totes eat in a few Days and adjournment i looked for next week unless things take a very unexpected turn. It will not be possible to reach a vote upon the cases the appointed senators at this session. No one not even the Republic ins believe that . Ady has any Case at All in his claim to be leg Illy elected to the seat held by senator Martin Kansas but the committee privileges and elections reported a Resolution authorizing a investigation. It is not yet certain however that it will he made. The position assistant treasurer the u. S., at new York is one the most important from a strictly commercial Point View us Der the government. He handles More Money than any Man in the country and to to give a Bond $200, 000, Szmet lung that comp Raively few men can do. Tin nomination . Conrad n. Jordan new Rork Tho was the u. Treasurer during president Cleveland a first administration to this position gave general satisfaction both in political and business circles. The investigation the weather Bureau has so far been confined to the charges against employees stealing from the Bureau which have bean More than proven by the evidence. The next charge to be taken up will be that violating the civil service Law by employing incompetent men at fancy salaries and Prouo Ting others for no better reason than that they were favor Ite Sof some High official his friends. The opposition to the confirmation . Tecklt s to be comptroller cur Lucy was evidently confined to Republican newspapers. It did not material ize in the Senate As he was promptly confirmed this week As he would have been last week if somebody had not started a silly Story about Ais Nomina Tion being the result a clerical error. The nomination was not acted upon at the first meeting the finance committee held after it was made because that Story the members the com Mittee thinking it Best to wait until the president could be seen before report ing upon it. The retiring Republican comptroller thinks . Cleveland was Wise in nominating a Good lawyer to the position As complicated Legal questions Are constantly Luiting up for him to decide. Secretary motion smiles at the criticism fired at him because he abolished the sinecure held by the late . Blaines brother. A a i found said the Secretary that . Blame was drawing $2, 000 a year for doing nothing at least nothing that was the slightest value to the government and he would have had to go All the same even if he had been . Cleveland a brother. That Sall there is to Secretary Herbert is heels Over head in the making preparations for the big naval review to begin in Hampton roads next week. The Secretary will during the review. Be quartered upon a u. Vessel in order that he May enjoy seeing the Shine taken off the foreign War ships. The president will not go to Hampton roads but will meet the vessels in new York whither they go after the programme in Hampton roads is completed and it May he that he will go direct from new York to Chicago to Ogen the worlds fair before returning to Washington but he Hasni to finally decided about that.
