New Castle News Weekend (Newspaper) - March 28, 1998, New Castle, Pennsylvania New Castle news saturday March 28, 1998 3intentions, results not always the same dear readers it did no to work. That a become quite obvious considering the volume of phone Calls and mail that has come into the new Castle news office this week. Most of your criticism has entered on a Story that appeared in last saturdays edition of the news a profile of a former Star player for new Castle who later was convicted of criminal acts. The news chose to do a Story on him As a tie in to the coverage of the running red hurricanes Victory March to Hershey. The piece was seen by editors and reporters of the news to be positive in nature. Now by positive we done to mean a Rah we merely attempted to show How one Man who admitted wrongdoing is trying to get his life in order and return to his Hometown. A Man who wanted us to use his Story As a deterrent to keep youngsters out of trouble. In no Way did the news set out to diminish his crimes or scrutinize the victims in the Case. We did not set out to give this Man a Star and we certainly did no to mean to obscure the Waves of pos newspapers can learn lessons from readers Tive coverage that we be Given the new Castle High basketball team Over the past several weeks. But judging from the phone Calls and letters from you our valued readers our message was muddled. The Effort and Good intentions were present but the execution left something to be desired. Many of you told us the Story Wasny to warranted. Others believed the Story was a powerful and worthy piece but the headline was offensive. Still others Felt it was a Case of bad timing considering new castles appearance in the Pisa final that night. We Learned a number of valuable lessons this week but one stands out clearly we believed we were telling a Story that needed to be told and Felt that it was valid to package it in with the other Hershey coverage. However the presentation timing and headline missed the Mark with our readers. In other words our intent was positive but the result Wasny to. To All of you who cared enough to Call or write to express your opinions we offer a sincere thank you for pointing that out. And we feel it is our duty today to explain our position. After All we owe you that much. You Are the Backbone of this Community and so is your daily newspaper. You be entrusted us to Tell you the truth. You Trust that Well Call you to action when its time to right a wrong. And you Trust that Well let you know who is making this Community proud. Much of the Lime we succeed in our efforts As evidenced by last weeks record breaking single copy sales of the new Castle news. But other times we May miss the Mark. Our goal each Day is quite simple we strive to educate enlighten entertain and inspire our readers. If we accomplish that goal then we re making you think we re making you laugh we re making you cry and at times we re making you angry. A great daily newspaper does All of those consistently. And we want to be a great newspaper. But getting there does not come easily. There Are Days when Good intentions Lead to unhappy subscribers. And when thoughtful planning gives Way to unexpected problems. As a staff we re learning from our mistakes and we re working to produce the Best product we can for you. As an example the full color special sections on the a canes required newsroom staff members to work into the wee hours of the morning to put together. It Wasny to easy but we believe it was Worth the Effort. Just As new castles loss in the Pisa final does no to take away from a wonderful season we Hope this experience wont take away from All the outstanding coverage we be provided during the a canes playoff run. As mentioned before your feedback concerning saturdays edition was both honest and insightful. We thank you. It has created much discussion in the newsroom concerning the who the what and the Why of our news coverage. We re Only As Good As you can help us to be and we re always looking for better ways to serve you. After All this is your newspaper. Although you Trust us to shape and present the news As we see fit its still your paper. You Are the readers. You Are the Story subjects. At times you Are even the reporters. Most important to us you Are the valued customers. There a a quotation that Best sums up our Mission at the news. It goes something like this a a ship is Safe in the Harbor but that a not what ships were built to that end we done to always play it Safe. We do our Best each Day to Challenge ourselves to become better at what we do and in the process Challenge you to help make this Community a better place to live. But in this instance the people have spoken. You told us that we failed in the presentation of a Story we believed was worthy of telling. We heard you loud and Clear. And we thank you again for your concern. Very truly yours. Max Thomson publisher Tim Kolodi Lel. Managing editor Dan Irwin assistant managing editor canes fans react letter to the editor this is in response to the article in saturdays newspaper March 21,1998 entitled a from Hershey bars to prison bars a written by Kayleen Cubbal. The new Castle red Hurricane team and coach Sarandrea have just completed a super season and have Given a positive hopeful spirit to the fans and the Community. This spirit and underlying positive attitude is exactly what the Community needs to continue to Progress. There Are Many positives happening in the Community that we should All attempt to build upon. We should strive to make the Community the Best we can now and in the future. The basketball program becomes our ambassador of Good will that showcases our Community in All its travels culminating in Hershey. If you dig very deeply into this article you might find the lesson that or. Whetzel had made a mistake is paying his dues and has taken a positive step toward getting things in order. However the title a from Hershey bars to prison bars a hardly portrays the positive Side of anything. In fact it leaves us with the question a is the new Castle news stooping to tabloid style headlines to sell newspapers a we feel this is not responsible journalism and surely does not serve the team fans and most importantly the Community. We look to the news for its leadership. We Hope that in the future that leadership is Well deserved. David and Julie Gettings new Castle the letter was also signed by Jour other people letter to the editor although i am not an avid fan i have certainly been following the successes of the new Castle High school running red hurricanes. Your coverage for the most part has been very Good. However i have found several articles in extremely poor taste and offensive. Both articles were written by Kayleen Cubbal. The first was about a Young player. It was Fine when is. Cubbal pointed out that he rarely gets playing time but he has a Way of getting the fans enthused. But pointing out that a player has big ears i am sure that he and his family were embarrassed by that mention. As a teacher i would expect to be reprimanded if i were to Call attention to a physical attribute of any of my students. The second article written by is. Cubbal in last saturdays paper on the front Page in fact. The article about Barry Whetzel had nothing to do with new Castle basketball s current Success. Perhaps is. Cubbal would be More comfortable writing for something like the National enquirer Kathleen Young new Castle letter to the editor after Reading the article in March 21 paper titled a Hershey bars to prison bars a i just had to write. If that was supposed to be a human interest Story i done to know what decent human would even be interested in it. Everyone that i talked to a a both Black and White a thought the Story was degrading and god knows the timing of been worse. Did the new Castle news even care what that would of done to his nephews spirit if this is your Way of trying to sell papers if you keep this up you wont be Selling too Many. Yvette Hambrick new Castle letter to the editor this letter is to comment on your appalling Lack of even rudimentary Good taste with your front Page article of March 21, 1998, a Hershey bars to prison that is really what new Castle needs a someone to Knock the pins from under them while they re up. Nothing like Good old Community spirit is there the next time you Are looking for someone to take the task for knocking new Castle look to your own staff. Thanks news for showing us your True colors a and they Arentt red and Black. Nancy Leslie new Castle letter to the editor my most Heartfelt congratulations go out to the new Castle red Hurricane basketball team coach John Sarandrea his talented coaching staff and the faithful fans. Being season ticket holders my family and i attended All of their games. They brought a wonderful sense of camaraderie to us and to the Community. The new Castle Field House was filled to capacity during Home games and you could follow the caravan of fans to the away games. We attended Road games where the number of new Castle followers exceeded the Home teams fans. That a loyalty at its finest. While new castles team should receive accolades the new Castle news should receive the a Raspberry award for decent journalism. Never have i been so appalled As when i returned from Hershey on sunday evening March 22, and picked up my weekend edition of the new Castle news. Instead of having a big Blowout front Page on the positive Way these deserving Young men have represented the City of new Castle and the new Castle area school District you chose to run a Story on the fall of former High school standout Barry Whetzel. The headline a from Hershey bars to prison bars a was ludicrous. The a Hershey bars were 16 years ago. So Many events can happen in that time Span to change the course of a persons life. In a sure that a lot of us fans that followed the team in 1982 would have appreciated Reading about Barry at a different time but definitely not on the Day of the state finals on the front Page. That Story could have been used on an off Day when you need to fill up space. In my opinion this article was neither timely or in Good journalistic taste. Whoever made the decision to run that Story As front Page news should be called on the carpet for it. If As Many people write to you As were complaining in Hershey about this article your next 10 issues would be nothing More than letters to the editor. Of course maybe then we new Castle fans would have something decent to read about.
