McGonigal: Treasurer’s resignation doesn’t mean Can the Ban is divided
The resignation ot its treasurer doesn't mean the Can the Ban political action committee is divided, a group leader said.
Treasurer jay Patrick announc ed his resignation late Tuesday, citing differences with some members of the PAC which successfully petitioned to force the Nov. 8 referc^n-dum eltHJtion on whether disp)s-able containers should lie banner I on the city's Comal and Cuadalu(>e rivers.
Gan the Ban's Mark McGonigal, who spoke on behalf of the group at a Sept. 22 Rotary Club mc^eting, said Wednesday the ros-
ignation ot Patrick ci(K?sn't mean tnat there's a schism in the group.
"There's no split," McGonigal said. "A split doesn't constitute one individual — out of 200 pie — saying 'I'm out.' "
Patrick announcc‘d that he'd stef)pc'd down as treasurer and would not appc>ar as a sfx\iker for the group in an email to the Citizens Al iance for Smart Expansion (CASE), which had asked him to s[x*ak on Ix'half of Can the Ban at a Tliursday evening c'vent.
"... I have left the organization," Patrick wrote. "I still feel strongly that the dis^x)sal)le container nan (ordinance is a very bad thing for families and the New Braunfels economy, but I can no longer associate* myself with the group due to a fringe element sending the group in multiple wrong directions that
will cause them not only to lose the election, but lose c redibility with those that signc’d the* (leti-tion. I encourage you all to still fight the ordinance and vole against, but pic'ase cki not assoc i-ate me with (’an the Ban PA( ."
On Thursday, Patrie k told the Herald-Zeitung, "I resigned due to a differing opinion on how the campaign should be run. Thc'rc' was talk internally of a rcKjall |x*ti-tion and that it had alrc'acK' Ix'gun — at which time, I felt the ikhxI to sq)arate mysc4f frorTi the organization bc'c ause it was not doing the things it was designc*d to do."
Patrick added: "I still firmly stand against the ban, but will drive people to the polls independently through friends and family."
