LETTERS TO THE EDITOR School districts send wrong message on teachers value I with the News Digest report from 20 edition which concerned the two Comal and NBISD teachers who were recently recognized for their outstanding educational contributions to their What a sad way to recognize their achieve ments Both school districts administrators have decided to not fully compensate them during their threeweek professional development trip to What kind of message are both districts sending to their teacher The message I loud and is that these teachers have done really great jobs and have brought positive recognition to their schools and their school but their administrators are going to make them pay for by reducing their compensation I am sure this action will stimulate other teachers to excel and work many extra hours to get that kind of recog nition and appreciation from their administra I cant prove but I would be willing to bet that not one administrator in either district has had their compensation reduced for any of the many professional development trips they have made at school district Teachers are the heart and soul of a school dis trict and routinely work many hours without It would seem the finan cial impact of one teacher from each school dis trict being paid their contracted salary during a professional development trip could be easily especially when a considerable amount of money can be spend on Astroturf or other such noneducational items and can be overcome Jim Beach New Braunfels We need more competition in the grocery store business Do any of our city fathers or people in the know have a clue if there is a possibility of anoth er major grocery chain coming to New Braunfels in the near future We are in desperate need of one I have never shopped in a grocery store in any other city that did not pleasantly offer to help you carry your groceries to the as are only helping them save money on the number of employees that they I do not feel this is our With the exception of the I feel most of the employees are far less than I have actually had stockers not even offer to get out of the way so that I might look over the meat they were I feel sure there are other shoppers out there that have encountered some of the same prob lems as I it is very apparent to me that they are slowly phasing out wellknown brands in order to place only their store Most shop pers want lets get another major grocery chain in our city that will be courteous and Marifyn Klein New Braunfels Use of rifle photograph sent wrong message about safety 1 was appalled to see the large picture on the front page of the Sept 14 paper with the muzzle of a rifle pointed directly at the The first rule of firearms safety is to treat every shotgun or handgun as if it were loaded and to make sure it is pointed in a safe To display a photograph such as you did is irrespon I have enjoyed target shooting and and as a parent and responsible I hope that your paper will print an expla also on the front that careless behavior with a firearm is not acceptable and include rules for firearms A major reason for the many firearms accidents today is that especially young are not It would be a service to our com munity if your paper assisted in disseminating this Everett Deschner Canyon Lake LITTIRS POLICY Letters must be 250 words or The HeraldZeitung reserves Reese is a columnist for King Fea tures You can write to him at Box I really dont understand George Why cant he say 1 was convinced that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction but apparently our intel ligence was Im sorry to have misled but getting rid of Saddam is still a good and so there is apparently some thing in the Bush genes that for bids ever admitting to having made a Such arrogance cost his father a second and it could do the same to the sons political In the fathers he refused to apologize to the American people for breaking his prom ise never to allow new son Bush doesnt bring up the topic of weapons of mass except to say that hes sure they will find evidence of dormant programs werent used to sell Americans on going to Stockpiles and imminent acquisition of nuclear weapons were used to sell the That as Edward Kennedy has put it so a Saddam was a bad though the worst of his brutalities occurred during the 1980s when he was an American But a Saddam I lussein without weapons of mass living in a falling apart economy with a falling apart was a problem for not for All of Saddams neighbors told Bush that they were not afraid of There getting rid of him was not worth the 300 American lives already spent and more sure to Now the neoconservatives who got us into a war on false pretenses are saying we cant afford to lose the This same ploy was used to prolong Americas stay in We wont lose the peace if we hand Iraq over to the Iraqis and say We will if we prolong our That old colonialist racism is manifest ing itself in all these remarks about our having to tutor the Iraqis in running their own The Iraqis can govern them Theyve been a nation as long as Finland and a civilization longer than Bush wants to stay in Iraq for purely economic He wants to make sure its not the who decide who gets the business of a rebuilding a He doesnt want a democratic government in He wants a puppet government that will follow his Its too bad Bush isnt a Hes fol lowing in the colonialist footsteps of the They tried occupation and found it was too bloody and so they set up a puppet The Iraqis over threw And the probability is high that they will drive us out and overthrow whatever puppet government we leave The question is how many billions of dollars and how many American lives we want to spend teaching George Bush a lesson he should have learned at the We Americans are not cut out for When Arab terrorists struck the twin the FBI and CIA suddenly discovered they were woefully short of people who could read and speak Yet weve been involved in the Middle East for a I met an Air Force gen eral in charge of choosing nuclear and during the conversation he referred to Iran as an Arab Its in case you dont God only knows what poor people he chose as targets for anni We have soldiers scattered around the world in 120 The vast military industrial complex is bleeding us We have a president who advocates an end less Our country will not survive an endless Well go If the president aspires to be the he should read some Roman None of the or their fared very My prayer is that Americans will wake up and reestablish the republic the Founding Fathers gave along with a policy of armed neutrality and no foreign That way leads to a bright The road to empire leads to i ;
