New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - September 26, 1997, New Braunfels, Texas Herald-Zeitung Q Friday, September 26,1997 Q 7A Save your soul while saving on long distance, surfing the Net? By DONNA MURPHY WESTON Associated Press Writer Few people would associate evangelism with surfing the World Wide Web or gossiping on the telephone for hours on end. James S. Mullholland Jr. wants to change that. The Hillsdale, N.J., entrepreneur has launched his own business Offering Internet and long distance services targeted at the nation’s Christians, particularly Roman Catholics. The lure: Catholic Telecom Inc. donates 3 percent of its sales to the customer’s charity, school or church of choice. Catholic Telecom is a reseller. It buys Internet service and long distance service in bulk from UniDial, a Louisville, Ky.-based distributor, and resells it to subscribers at competitive rates: $19.95 a month for unlimited Internet access, and a flat rate of 12.9 cents per minute for long distance calls made within the United States. Mullholland said his services* appeal to Christians is three-fold, allowing them to save money, serve God and support a chosen charity with very little effort expended. “They’re saving money versus what they’re using in almost all other cases, but they are supporting a charity they select and aiding the call to evangelize that all Christians have,’’ said Mullholland, 73, a longtime champion of Catholic causes. “We enable safe, clean Internet access,’’ he said. Soon, the company will also become a host for Web sites. Users who post salacious content will be asked to refrain or go elsewhere, he said. Catholic Telecom was started as a commercial venture to fund Mullholland’s nonprofit Catholic Information Center on Internet, a high-tech, Catholic version of the Christian Scientists’ reading rooms. CICI is a central clearinghouse of Catholic publications and has a searchable database of news, the Bible and Catholic teachings and liens* The site also offers * its marketing campaign by buying Tit Vatican apd a church space on other Web sites and search -    *    engines and entering cooperative '    *    **    agreements with others. Whether subscribing to Catholic Telecom is the best way to. support a favored charity is a matter Af debate* Consumers considering signing up O! links I _____ Miami said the project is his way of answering the church’s call to evangelize. Currently, Mullholland subsidizing the $200,000 annually that the CICI runs in the red. The i with Catholic Telecom dr a similar operation brings in abouf^5Q,000 a prog year in contributions, he said. Catholic Telecom, announced in May, currently has about 300 customers, most of whom learned of the company through their church, friends or the Web site, he said. Mullholland is hoping that number will increase vastly soon. The company recently officially started program shouldn’t let the appeal of automatic charitable giving sway them from a better deal, said Daniel Borochoff, president of the American Institute of Philanthropy inTkthesda, Md., a charity watchdog group. “Compare the rates and quality. It may be the case that someone else could offer a better deal. If so, go Oppenheimer, president of Abased ICB Toll-Free with the better deal and you can donate the money saved to the charity,’’ Borochoff said. “If the guy’s offering them a better deal, and all else being equal, sure, go with them.’ Judith New Yorl Consultancy, said dedicating a portion of its sales to charity is an excellent way for Catholic Telecom to create a niche in a saturated market. “It’s intelligent marketing. I wouldn’t be surprised to see more companies follow,’’ Oppenheimer said. Besides, she said, “Seeing business do good is a nice trend.’’ itu»m .»W i ■feat, IWL 'n I r»- 661 South Walnut 608-0017 John B. Moczygemba, D.D.S.
