In fat t, in third grade, I thought it was pretty appropriate that the word curse was part of the phrase. As a t hiid, I could never make my writing fit the beautiful lines in tne work-liook. The flowmg letters looked so effortless and cool, like flowing ballerinas. My letters, on the other hand, looked like they had been ridden hard and pul up wet. I couldn't wait to be releastvrl from cursive writing, to get to high S( h(K)l, where, I was told, vou could just print. I begged for early release as I sfrugg1(‘d to create som('-thing somewhat legible. ()n(e 1 hit print-fx'rmissi-ble age, I never looked b,K k, other than turning my own signature into a flowing scrawl that did not l(x)k anything like the letters in mv name, other than a vague W. So vvhen I heard that the movement was on to com-{)letely erase the cursive writing r('C]uirement from Schools, I felt no remorse about it at all. Turns out, cursive handwriting hits now Ix'en omit-UhI trom the Common ( ore State Standards, a school ( urriculum standard for 40 states. iexas, ot course, is not on(' of them, bei ausc\ well, w(''re Texas and we're not so crazv about standards w(* don't invent. Still, trom what I've heard, even in Texas hand-writing/c ursive writing is headed tor extinction. My grandchildren will likely stare at the flowing k'tlers ot the Dec laration ot indefX'ndence and wonder what why they didn't put It in a nit e Arial tont. In time', cursive writing will be as mysterious as Sanskrit Someday, there could be an arc hc'oiogist digging up my third grade workbook. And they won't have a [)rayer of deciphcT-ingit. That's OK.
