another. These can still be seen, however, within the archives and the keeping of the Catholic Church.
The Bible, therefore, came from the Catholic Church — the church did not come from the Bible as some believe. Actually, the complete list is called the canon of scripture and includes 46 old testament books and 27 new testament books. So when Pastor Lockhart said, “Let’s talk Bible,” he apparently was unaware of this truth.
He tries to show how God’s own mother is sinful by the following Bible references: Psalms 14:1-4 (which is actually a lament over widespread corruption), Romans 3:10-12 and Romans 3:23 (both are letters to the Romans exhorting them to goodness) and Isaiah 53:6 et a1 is telling those Jews of that time how sinful they are. Mary did not even live in those times.
Further, in his interpretation of Gal. 4:10-11, he implies that St. Paul is talking about the observance of such things as the Assumption of Mary being a worry to St. Paul, when in fact, St. Paul’s worry was for those Galatians who might return to the slavery of the law after they had been converted. Also, the passage quoted, Luke 1:45-55, is
a canticle. A canticle means (according to Webster) “a spoken or chanted nonmetrical rhyme.” All hymns are forms of prayer, praising and glorifying God.
Catholics believe and teach tradition as well as the Bible.
The doctrine of the Assumption of Mary is ancient in the church and has deep roots in the Scripture’s teaching on the holiness and dignity of Mary.
As early as around the year 500 A.D., the Eastern Church celebrated on Aug. 15, the feast of Mary’s Dormition her “falling asleep” in the Lord. By the end of the eighth century, the feast was celebrated throughout the Western Church. Many centuries of belief and devotion were crowned when the doctrine of the Assumption was formally defined by Pope Pius XI I on Nov. I, 1950.
And as far as our personal salvation, St. Paul says, “. . . I drive my body and train it for fear that I myself after preaching the gospel, should find myself unqualified.” (I Cor. 9:25-27).
We are further told we must “. . .
. work out our salvation with fear and trembling.” Philippians 2:12.
