New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - September 10, 2005, New Braunfels, Texas \ Page 6A — Herald-Zeitung — Saturday, September IO, 2005 DEWALT CONTINUED FROM Page 1AMother to be charged • with three felonies Judge Jack Robison, who conducted the 2002 custody trial, set bail on DeWalt at $600,000. Michael DeWalt, who was awarded custody of his son on Oct. 25, 2002 after a two-week custody trial in New Braunfels, was to meet his son for die first time in nearly three years early this morning at the New Braun-fels Municipal Airport. DeWalt thanked authorities late Friday night on his way to the airport. “I want to thank everybody for all their help, particularly the New Braunfels Police Department,” DeWalt said. “There’s been a huge coordination effort between all the agencies. It was nice to see them come together and make this happen. Its been a long road to get th£re.” DeWalt said he looked forward to meeting his son. but what happened after they got together would be directed, he said, by what a San Antonio-based psychologist, Joann Murphey, recommended. Murphey, who police said counseled the boy and was familiar with the DeWalt case, was put on a plane by the Houston-based Child Rescue Network, and accompanied Suzanne and Jeremy DeWalt on the flight back to Texas. “I just want to see him,” DeWalt said. “I d like to know what he’s been up to for the last three years. We have a lot of catching up to do." DeWalt said he was looking forward to reuniting his son with his nephews, Luke and Nick, who live in Fort Worth with his brother, Rod DeWalt. “I'm looking forward to getting them together as soon as we can,” DeWalt said. “But we ll defer to Dr. Murphey.” Also meeting the DeWalts at the New Braunfels airport early this morning would be Rust, Waldrip and other New Braunfels police. “Twelve citizens of Comal County, after a fair and impartial trial, decided that Michael DeWalt was the appropriate person to be his custodial parent,” Waldrip said. “We've been diligently seeking to enforce the jury’s verdict ever since. Its a Michael DeWalt Suzanne DeWalt great day when we can see that that occurs." Rust said DeWalt was believed found Thursday. “We received information that there was a possible sighting and upon getting that, we confirmed the information and followed up on the lead,” Rust said. Local police contacted the FBI in San Antonio and in Monterrey, and the FBI in Mexico coordinated surveillance with authorities in that country. DeWalt and her son were followed throughout the day Friday and were taken into custody late that day. “I received the call about 8 p.m. that in fact she was in custody and she had a lot of false identification,” Rust said. “Since that time, its my understanding she has admitted her true identity.” Local police, Rust said, worked very closely with Philip Klein of Klein Investigations who became involved in the investigation several months ago with the New York-based Child Rescue Network Inc., donating his expertise and resources Rust said were not available in the public sector. “He had been down in that area before, distributed flyers, and my understanding is this caller had seen information off one of the flyers distributed during one of his trips to Mexico," Rust said. Suzanne DeWalt alleged her exhusband and two of his relatives sexually abused her son on a trip out of state in 2000. lx>cal police, Florida police, Texas Department of Public Safety Special Crimes Division, the FBI and the U.S. Naval Investigative Service investigated the charges and ruled them unfounded. The Comal County jury that heard the custody case ruled against Suzanne DeWalt, and on Oct. 25, 2002, she, her mother, Margaret “Peggy” Kearns, and the boy disappeared before the boy could be surrendered to his father. Margaret Keams and her husband, Ed, were both convicted on charges of either interfering with custody or hindering apprehension and served jail time. Both remain on probation. Rust said Detective Mike Penshom and Crime Analyst Libby Rinehart coordinated the investigation that stretched to nearly three years. "I can tell you there are coundess hours, countless telephone calls and countless time spent not only following up leads that were viable, but leads that were not,” Rust said. “When you investigate a case nationally, there’s always someone calling to say they saw them somewhere. We’ve had sightings all over the United States we’ve had to track down. It’s been a major part of Libby’s job. She’s spent time on this case daily. She was relentless.’’ Penshorn, he said, worked to follow up and eliminate the leads and coordinate work with other agencies. Waldrip credited Penshorn and Rinehart with keeping the focus on the case locally. “Their contribution should not be overlooked,” Waldrip said. “Our concern the whole time has been Jeremy.”' Devotional Page B&C Service Center Automotive Repairs 211 North Business ii 629-1072 Catering & Decorating ' Wedding ' Rirthduw • Parties • Ranquets • Debuts • Picnics • Ftowers • Ftoral Arrangements Cateran CATEMst, * amnnnw; I tumult to /J*n> a Hite 34# .4Ives terne Sew Braunfels, TX 78130 (830) 629-5225 I q    1^    830/620-4822    (fox I Keo I eyes    Mi choel D.
