■ Award-winning speaker Merle Kaderli will compete in the Toastmasters Humorous Speech Contest on Thursday, Sept. 14, 1995. The contest, which is free and open to the public, begins at 7 p.m. at Sematech in Austin. Kaderli, a charter member of the San Marcos Toastmasters Club, won first place in the San Marcos competition last month. Her category was “Table Topics,” in which competitors speak extemporaneously for two minutes.
■ Shannon Prevo, of Marion, a senior in electrical engineering at Texas A&M University, was among 33 undergraduates selected recently to present findings from a summer of research carried out through the Dwight Look College of Engineering at TAMU and the Texas Engineering Experiment Station (TEES).
TEES is an engineering research agency of the TAMU system. Prevo, a graduate of Judson High School, won a competitive grant awarded by the
General Electric Foundation’s Faculty of the Future program and assisted on a project conducted by a faculty researcher. She was then required to prepare a multimedia presentation of findings similar to those given at professional conferences. Her presentation was “Switched Capacitor Filter Design and Analysis.”
■ Kristin Plaehn, of Seguin, has been appointed registrar at Texas Lutheran College. As registrar, Plaehn manages student records, coordinates registration for each semester, and schedules classroom assignments and courses. She also oversees the registration process and programs at Texas Lutheran’s Randolph AFB cen

Plaehn first joined the faculty as an instructor of political science in 1987. From 1989-94, she was a foreign service officer with the U.S. Information Agency in Frankfurt, Germany. She returned to Texas Lutheran as an instructor of political science in the fall of 1994. Along with her duties as registrar, she continues to teach one class each semester.
She holds a BA degree from Texas Lutheran and a MA degree from the University of Denver. She is a member of the Texas Association of Admissions Officers and Registrars and the American Association of College Registrars.
Plaehn and her husband, John Maxwell, have one daughter, Natasha Maxwell. They are members of Faith Lutheran Church in Seguin.
ing. The award is presented to one junior faculty member and one senior staff member. Augustin, who has been a teacher at SWT since 1978, was presented with the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching in the associate/full professor rank. The selection is made by a committee composed of faculty, staff and community members.
With this honor, Augustin became the first teacher in the history of SWT to win all three major teaching awards granted by the institution. In 1983, he was selected by the student body as the Outstanding Educator. In 1994, the SWT Alumni Association presented him with their Teaching Award of Honor.
Dr. Augustin and his wife, Rebecca, a teacher at Seele Elementary School, are active in the educational community in New Braunfels and frequently present workshops and lectures on Arab and Islamic culture.
