New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - September 4, 1987, New Braunfels, Texas The Singing Packs Circus-loving priest has Ringling Brothers parish FORT WORTH AF Tigers and grizzly bears rolled by in cages and elephants moved within crushing distance of the Rev Jack Toner backstage at the Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus The longtime Catholic priest didn t budge an inch He smiled and waved at a showgirl atop one ol the elephants Circus music played and a clown winked and said Hi Father Jack just before the nation s largest circus t**gan a recent performance at the Tarrant County Convention Center on its current tour of Texas They say this is the greatest -how on Earth. but I say these are the greatest people on Earth Toner said Toner is a circus priest He travelseverywhere with the cir cust*s counseling employees and conducting church services while wearing vestments decorated with a clow n on one side and a circus ring on the other Each day he prays that trapeze ar lists- animal trainers and others per forming dangerous acts will come through safely He's had to conduct one funeral for an aerialist who was killed in a fail I love the circus." said the gray haired 73-year-old priest as he w atch ed the performers parade I never get tired of it I ve seen this same performance at least 500 times but I always find some little detail I ve missed Toner s appointment to be National Chaplain to Circuses in America in 1983 was the culmination of a lifelong dream I became enamoured with the cir cus when I was 9 years old he said He would play hooky from school lr.
