Officers accepting anonymous tips
telephones Thursday night, offering those “in the know” the opportunity to turn in a dope dealer — and get paid for it.
New Braunfels police Detective Lt. Mike Rust said narcotics investigators would be answering the phones — not dispatchers or clerks. This would provide the public with unique access to the officers who do the investigating — and who go to judges seeking search warrants jftriook for drugs and stop arag- related activity.
“If you’re suspicious of one of your neighbors or know someone who is selling or purchasing drugs, call and give us the information,” Rust said
NBPD crime analyst Libby Rinehart said that a call won’t mean police will raid a suspected drug dealer’s place of business immediately.
“We’d appreciate any and all information anyone can give us about any criminal activity—and not just drugs — but it’s important to understand when you call that we can’t just go out and make arrests,” Rinehart said.
Sometimes, the tips will
provide information that is too old to get a search warrant; sometimes the information doesn’t rise up to constitutional standards for probable cause. In those cases, Rinehart said, the information is documented and saved as intelligence.
An undercover investigator with the Comal County Metropolitan Narcotics Task Force said he and other detectives would be working the phones Thursday night.
“We’re mainly looking for information about suspected drug dealers,” the detective said. “Also, if anyone has ever wanted to become an informant, they can do that at that time. They and their information will still remain confidential.”
The Crime Stoppers line is always available, the investigator said.
"Even if they have information they don’t feel like giving that day ... they can call the Crime Stoppers line any time involving any crime — burglaries or robberies — not just narcotics.”
Callers who provide infor-mation that leads to the arrest and grand jury indictment of drug suspects can get cash rewards of up to $1,000 for their information.
The effort is part of Red Ribbon Week, which is being observed in Comal County through Friday night.

They have raised $3,400 this year and $2,500 last year.
