New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - October 23, 2003, New Braunfels, Texas Page 6A — Herald-Zeitung — Thursday, October 23, 2003 SCOREBOARD WHATS AHEAD Rangers go for 3-0 See if Smithson Valley can extend its district winning streak against Brackenridge Thursday night. ' *    ■    v AIA * \ COMING FRIDAY ■MMMNN ICOUGARS CONTINUED FROM Page 5ACanyon could clinch playoff berth 2 in the district with losses to New Braunfels and Dripping Springs. Another loss would likely eliminate the Bears from postseason contention. On defense, Bastrop uses primarily a five-man front with two linebackers aimed at stopping the run. But regardless of who starts, Wright said Canyon will run the ball. “We’ve just got to do what we do best," Wright said. “We’re going to try to run the ball at them and we’ll pass when it’s available.” One key to the game Friday will be senior Tanner Henk who will start on both sides of the ball. Henk is a three-year starter at linebacker and Astros manager gets contract extension HOUSTON (AP) — Astros manager limy xWilliams received a one-year contract extension Wednesday, keeping him in the Houston dugout through the 2005 season. The Astros led the NL Central much of the season before losing out to the Chicago Cubs in the final week. They finished 87-75 in Williams’ second year as manager. That was a three-game improvement from 2002, when the Astros also finished second in the division. Williams has a career record of 866-746 in 11 seasons as a major league manager with Toronto (1986-89), Boston (1997-2001) and Houston. BLUNTZER CONTINUED FROM Page 5A Bluntzer played with NFL QB Boller do this five years and to stop at four would have been tough.” With his health concerns, Bluntzer said his lone goal entering the season was to start all 12 games. Midway through Cal s season, he has accomplished half of that goal. Despite the injuries, Bluntzer did have some good times his first four years in college. I Ie played alongside several NFL starters, including Baltimore quarterback Kyle Boller who left Cal last year. I Ie also played against other stars, including Heisman Trophy winner Carson Palmer. “It’s fun because you know you’re going against some of the best competition,’’ he said. “In college, all these guys are at least 280 (pounds). These guys are faster and they come off the ball better. They are so much tougher and faster. It’s amazing. You see these uniforms on HSPN. It’s fun.” This season, the Golden Bears have been erratic. At times, they look like world-beaters, while at others they struggle mightily. Cal upset USC when the Trojans were ranked in the Top IO, but then lost to Oregon State, just last week, Cal forced UCIA into overtime, but lost 23-20. Bluntzer said he hopes the team turns it around quick enough to earn an invitation to a bowl game. When the season ends, Bluntzer said his playing career will too. When he leaves (California, Bluntzer will take more than fond memories with him. He is scheduled to graduate this spring with a degree in Conservation Resource Studies. I Ie said he would like to use the degree to work with the Parks Service. “My education is why I came here,” he said. became a tight end earlier this season when an injury left a void for the Cougars. “Its going to be the exact opposite of last week,” Henk said. ’’They’re going to run first. We have to be real physical. We have to step up on defense and move the ball on offense.” Last week, the Cougars fell behind 19-10 at Lake Travis, but shut down the Lake Travis passing game in the second half and rallied for a 23-19 win. “We just fought through,” Henk said. “We knew we had to win to keep going. Our goal is to win district.” Henk admits that playing on both sides of the ball can wear a player out, but said it’s just something he has to do to help the team win. Henk is fourth on the team with 33 tackles and has one catch for 12 yards. Canyon could clinch a playoff berth by winning Friday, but Henk said the Cougars are only looking to the next opponent as they continue their season. “I don’t know how far we can go, but if we keep our minds in it, we’re a very good team,” he said. Wright said the comeback win over Lake Travis illustrated the character his team has, and said it also taught the Cougars an important lesson. “We’re proud that we can come back when we’re down,” Wright said. "We now know that there’s no deficit we can’t overcome.” DAVID INGRAM/Herald-Zeitung Tanner Henk hopes to lead Canyon to the playoffs.
