New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - October 18, 1985, New Braunfels, Texas Religious focus Hnrald-Zeitung Ff'day, October 18, 1985 Page BA Inheritances lie unclaimed By REV HAROLD H. ZIRKEL First United Methodist Church It is reported that millions of dollars are in unclaimed bank accounts across the country. Individuals who could lay legal claim either are ignorant of monies available to them, or for some reason they refuse to make claim. I recently read the story of a young man who refused to accept the estate which was left to him after his father’s death. When he was notified that he had inherited $400,000, he made it known that he did not want it. The trustees of the estate insisted that he take it, and they even took Ministerial alliance him to court to try and force him to accept his inheritance. But the judge ruled in favor of the young man. The judged ruled that he had a legal right to refuse his inheritance of $400,000. A court order was drawn up legally cutting the young man off from all future claims. Most of us probably respond to this story in about the same way. We say, “I would never do that.” We certainly are interested in having all that we are entitled to have. We wonder why anyone would refuse to claim monies in banks or refuse to claim an inheritance. Most of us would lay claim to such treasures. The ironic truth, however, is that so many of us refuse to claim treasures and inheritance even greater than those millions hidden away in bank accounts or any fortune we night inherit! Even though we are so often starving spiritually, we refuse to accept the great blessings God offers to us. It may be through ignorance that we fail to lay claim upon God’s treasures. Or it may be through actual design or purpose. But the result is the same. Our lives are spiritually impoverished even when great spiritual wealth is within our reach. As God’s children we can lay clam to the promises of our Father every day. He promises us that He loves us. He promises us that He will care for us. He offers us His mercy and forgiveness. Through Jesus, the Christ, God promises us new life. He offers us assurance and peace and joy. The Bible makes it very clear that we can lay claim to our salvation — we can lay claim to Heaven — to eternity. See CLAIM, Page 6A Worship at the church of your choice Local. The application by Gwen Buehrens was approved by the Standing Committee of clergy and lay representatives of the diocese following a two-hour meeting Thursday, Steve Weston, diocese communications officer, said. ‘‘I believe many have been waiting for this for a long time.” said Weston ‘The decision was taken not without a great deal of discussion and care.” A time and place has not yet been set for Mrs. Buehrens’ ordination, Weston said. He said ordination of women has been a controversial subject in the Episcopal Church. Women's ordination ‘‘is still a controversial issue within the diocese and within the more conservative areas of the church generally,” Weson said. Mrs Buehrens, presently a staff member of the Church of the Transfiguration in Dallas, has been a deacon for 13 years, said Weston. She was a graduate of Yale Divinity School and was ordained to the Diaconate at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco in 1972 Her husband, the Rev. John Buehrens, is minister of First Unitarian Church in Dallas.
