New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - October 14, 1987, New Braunfels, Texas Replacement games seem likely for NFL's third week Hera\<3-Zeitung New Braunfels Texas Wednesday October 14 1987 Page 11A Sportsworld WASHINGTON ( AP) Their hopes for a quick settle ment dashed, the NFL Players Association must now cope with yet another day in which the union’s solidarity will be severely tested The NP LF A's offer to return to work under certain con ditions. including binding arbitration on unsolved issues, was rejected Tuesday by the Management Council The union rejected management s counterproposal, so now the league s striking players face another deadline return to work today by I p rn or forfeit another week s pay It doesn t matter how many times we try they just refuse us at every turn union chief Gene Upshaw said AA hat we have is a threat to see if the players will break rank They’re bent on busting the union ” Several players including Washington Redskins defen sive end Dexter Manley New York Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor and New England Patriots quarterback Doug Flutie were expected to cross picket lines toda> The number of defections rose to 138 Tuesdav when five more players three Pittsburgh Steelers and two Los Angeles Raiders joined their teams That meant about 9 percent of the 1,585 players under union jurisdiction have crossed picket lines since the strike began Sept 22 But two teams the Washington Redskins and the Ran sas City Chiefs who have yet to have any players cross picket lines voted Tuesday to honor the strike for at least another week Tuesdays action on the negotiating front featured volleys between t pshaw and management head Jack Donlan but no agreement and no new date for the talks to resume Upshaw said he expected to stay in contact with Donlan by telephone but left the next move to the Management Council “It s in his court now " Upshaw said The day started when the owners considered, then rejected. the players demand for mediation and then binding arbitration The owners also insisted that returning players be bound bv the 1982 agreement for as long as it would take to put a new agreement in place Upshaw countered bv saying he would accept mediation on the key issue of free agency But he demanded ar bitration on the other issues and said there would have to be a time limit on how long the players would operate under the 1982 agreement “I’m tyring to get the players back to work but under some conditions in which we can all live under, he said ’ We re willing to work under the old agreement for some period of time but at some point there has to be a cutoff "We don t want this process to just go on for ever and ever * Donlan said be saw no reason to resume the talks that broke off last Sunday unless the union change^ its post lion or. key issues The league said the strike replacement games would go on again for the third weekend with free agents and those veterans who crossed the picket line Rockets expect to match Blazer offer HOUSTON (AP ) — Houston Rockets officials are trying to resign Ralph Sampson, who has been offered a six-year. $12 million contract by the Portland Trail Blazers Rockets General Manager Ray Patterson made no secret about his desire to resign the 7-4 forward, who became a free agent after last season “We've said all along that Ralph is a vital part of our ballclub," Patterson said “I look forward to meeting with Gene It s incumbent upon me to get it done ’ Sampson arrived in Houston over the weekend and met with Rockets owner Charlie Thomas, while Sampson's agent.
