Even boys went out to cheerleading camp
“It’s so funny when they say, ‘Look, it’s a Canyon cheerleader; I can’t wait to tell my mom,’” she said. “It’s really opened my eyes to how much kids look up to us.”
Nicolas Villareal, 9, said he thought he would give cheerleading a try because it is a family tradition. Nicolas said he did not personally know any male cheerleaders, but knew that they made important contributions.
“I thought it would be fun, and my mom used to do it,” he said. “Now that I tried (the camp), it is fun.”
Kerri Caldwell, the cheer camp coordinator, said more students turned out than ever before, partly because a picture button of campers was offered free with early registration.
“We had 165 this year, and last year we only had about 72,” she said. “It was beyond our expectations.”
Julie Brooke said her 6-year-old daughter, Bailey, is taking her first look at cheerleading, but seems to be catching on quickly. She said the camp was an easy way for her daughter to try out the sport.
“She came with another lithe girl,” Brooke said. “I haven’t had a chance to talk to her since it started, but she seems to be having fun out there.” Amber Cox, 12, said she is a practiced cheerleader and would not have missed the opportunity to polish her cheering skills. A former cheer class teacher and aspiring Canyon cheerleader, Amber said there are many benefits to making the team.
“I love cheerleading; I love all the jumps and yelling,” she said. “Also, you get to go to the games and see the cute boys.”
Rove says he wasn’t involved in leak
WASHINGTON (AP) — Senior aide Karl Rove denied to President Bush that he engaged in an effort to disclose the identity of a covert CIA operative to discredit her husband’s criticism of Iraq policy, say people familiar with Rove’s statements in a criminal investigation.
Rove’s brief discussion with Bush has been a mystery for two years because the White House publicly referred to it but refuses to say anything about it.
Beginning two years ago, the White House flatly denied that Rove had been involved in unlawfully leaking the identity of Valerie Plaine.

Earthquake kills thousands in South Asia
Daisy Flores, 5, watches and learns a cheer from a Canyon cheerleader Saturday morning.
ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) — A huge earthquake triggered landslides, toppled an apartment building and flattened villages of mud-brick homes Saturday, killing thousands across a mountainous swath touching Pakistan, India and Afghanistan. The worst damage was in Pakistan, where the dead included 250 girls crushed at a school and 200 soldiers on duty in the Himalayas.
The casualty toll from the 7.6-magnitude tremor stood at more than 3,000 by early Sunday and was rising as rescuers struggled to dig people from the wreckage, their work made more difficult as rain and hail turned dirt and debris into sticky muck.
For hours, aftershocks rattled an area stretching from Afghanistan across northern
Pakistan into India’s portion of the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir.
The earthquake, which struck just before 9 a.m., caused buildings to sway for about a minute in the capitals of Afghanistan, Pakistan and India, an area some 625 miles across. Panicked people ran from homes and offices, and communications were cut.
Most of the devastation occurred in the mountains of northern Pakistan. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was centered about 60 miles northeast of the capital, Islamabad, in the forested mountains of Pakistani Kashmir.
“It is a national tragedy," said Maj. Gen. Shaukat Sultan, Pakistan’s chief army spokesman. “This is the
worst earthquake in recent times.”
In Mansehra. a shopowner named Haji Fazal Ilahi stood vigil over the body of his 14-year-old daughter, which lay under a sheet on a hospital mattress. He said his wife, another daughter and a brother also died when the family’s house fell.
“I could see rocks and homes tumbling down the mountains,” said Ilahi. “When I reached my village, there was nothing left of my home.”
India’s government offered condolences and assistance to Pakistan, a longtime rival with which it has been pursuing peace efforts after fighting three wars since independence from British rule in 1947, two of them over Kashmir.
