New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - October 9, 2005, New Braunfels, Texas Page 8A — Herald-Zeitung — Sunday, October 9, 2005 home___ CONTINUED FROM Page 1A Homeowners work for at least 300 hours A Habitat homeowner participates in the building of his or her own residence, putting in at least 300 hours of “sweat equity.” Sponsors donate materials and additional labor, and die homeowner purchases back the residence at an affordable rate — with no interest. But Habitat homeowners often become believers in the program and find themselves spending spare days working on homes, helping others with that hand up they themselves got. Thats probably how it will be for Munoz and Alejos, who work at Kirkwood Manor, which is where they heard of the program. Neither woman, who will share the home with their grandchildren, had a background in the construction trades and probably wouldn’t have expected to one day build their own home. “It was awesome, and I enjoyed it," Munoz said. “It was nice working with other people and helping each other. And actually, it was exciting because I d never done it.” I labitat Construction supervisor Jim Lancharic said the building of die Munoz and Alejos home went "especially well." “They worked hard,” Lancharic said. “Between them, diey put in a lot of weeknights and Saturdays to help with the build. They’ve done a fair amount of the building and a Submitted photo Clockwise from left, Jacob Ozuna, Emma Alejos, Joshua Davilla and Esther Munoz on the front step of their new home at 128 Rosedale Ave. lot of the painting on their own. Its a real joy to see homeowners jump right in.” Munoz is no stranger to hard work or to jumping rigid in. “We till worked hard, mostly doing everything — nailing, painting, measuring — and it was something I’d never done before. There are a lot of things you learn about that you never knew about,” Munoz said. This weekend, I labitat is setting the foundation for its next house on Rosedale and preparing the forms for its fourth. so Munoz and Alejos soon will have neighbors with whom they’ll share something in common — a sense of pride that comes with ownership, with the added satisfaction that comes from having done it yourself. Munoz says theres nothing like it. “When they need me, and I ’m not working, I TI volunteer to help. I want to thank everybody for helping out and supporting us,” Munoz said. “It was a blessing for us to be there together, working on our house. From the bottom of my heart, I really want to thank all of them.” ABOUT FACE turn around /--fr vO YOUR CONFIDENCE Aesthetic Skincare Center We change the "FACE" of lives. Officials are rewriting that plan to designate not just who cares for the sick but who will keep the country running amid the chaos, said an influenza specialist who is advising the government. “How do you provide food, water... basic security for the population?” asked Michael Osterholm of the University of Minnesota, a government adviser who has a copy of the draft plan and described it for The Associated Press. “This is a much more comprehensive view than has previously been detailed,” he said in an interview Saturday. The Bush administration has spent the last year updating its plan for how to fight the next flu pandemic. While it is impossible to say when one will strike, the fear is that the bird flu in Asia could trigger one if it mutates to start spreading easily among people. A recent draft of the plan, first reported Saturday by The New York!lines, models what might happen based on the last century’s three pandemics. In a best-cast1 scenario, about 200.000 people might die. But if the next pandemic resembles the birdlike 1918 Spanish flu, as many as 1.9 million could die, Osterholm said. Unfinished!
