COLLEGE STATION (AP) — Texas A&M offensive tackle Alan Reuber knows the sting of pubUc scrutiny aU too weU. That’s why he’s so sympathetic to the Aggies’ beleaguered defense.    .    . “For four years we were the kicking dogs offensively and the offensive fine especiaUy,” Reuber said Tuesday. “We were the ones trying to pick up the slack so I know exactly where they are.” The Aggies’ once proud defense has been booted Cowboys hope to end losing streak against Eagles Sunday IRVING, Texas (AP) — Now that the DaUas Cowboys are * feeling good about themselves, here come the Philadelphia Eagles to try spoiling their fun. Again. The last four seasons, the Eagles have beaten the Cowboys six straight times and seven of eight. WhUe that kind of frequency is enough to give any team a complex, the intriguing part is that most of those Philadel-phia victories shook things up in DaUas more than a typical loss would. There was the end to a 3-0 start in 1999 that also turned out to be the end of Michael Irvin’s career. There was the pickle juice game that set Dave Campo’s tenure off to a bad start and the Eagles’ appearance the day it became obvious Campo would be fired. Philadelphia also ruined Joey Galloway’s debut and proved that Ryan Leaf was a historicaUy bad idea. Now Jerry Jones' latest, greatest experiment is off and running. New coach BUI Par-ceUs has DaUas at 3-1, first in the NFC East and riding its first three-game winning streak since 1999. MeanwhUe, the Eagles have battled back from an 0-2 start with two straight wins and are just one game behind the Cowboys. For their next feat, the Cowboys must do more than just beat the Eagles. They also must exorcise this PhiUy Funk before it turns into the kind of jinx supporters of the Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox have been lamenting for generations. Mavericks top Magic, 99-89 around for three straight weeks, most recently by Texas Tech, which Ut up the scoreboard in Saturday’s 59-28 loss. It was the most points allowed by an Aggies defense in school history and the young defenders still have a tough schedule ahead. The Aggies offense hasn’t been setting records either in coach Dennis Franchione’s first season but the defense has been aUowing records to happen. The Aggies defense ranks 96th nationaUy in total defense and is 91st in pass defense. “It’s (criticism) not something we didn’t expect,” said safety Jaxson Appel. “We haven’t played well enough to keep people from harping on us. Until we do, they’re not going to stop. The only people who can stop that is us and the way we play.” The art of tackling has eluded the Aggies much of the season. Defensive coordinator Carl Tarbush found one of his team’s defensive stats partic ularly offensive. “It was amazing how many yards they (Texas Tech) had after the point of contact,” Tarbush said. “They made we-U over 200 yards and you have to give them credit for that. But at the same time we’ve just got to do a better job of tackling.” But it wasn't until year* later that I saw the toll it had taken on me... Coach (Funk) wasn’t with us physically but he was with us in spirit." Teuton led the Rangers with six aces. Mueller had nine assists, Werchan eight kills and three blocks and Brooke LaRue six digs. DALLAS (AP) — Rookie free agent Marquis Daniels scored 12 of his 17 points in the second half and Dirk Nowitzki had 16 points as the Dallas Mavericks beat the Orlando Magic 99-89 Tuesday night in an exhibition game. Mavericks forward Antawn Jamison sat out with back spasms. Jamison, who was acquired from Golden State in August, is listed as day to day. Dallas (1-1) was also without guard Michael Finley, who missed his second consecutive exhibition game with a strained right quadriceps.
