(AP) — A man illegally chopping down a 100-foot tree for firewood watched in horror as it fell on his fiancee and their infant son, crushing them both to death. Keith Rademaker Jr. had been chopping at the Douglas fir for nearly an hour when a gust of wind toppled it over Friday morning. Rademaker’s fiancee, Can Ann Clark, was taking their 5-month-old son, Aaron, out of a safety seat in the car at the time. “All I could ck) was yell ‘No!’ I couldn’t believe it,’’ Rademaker said. “It happened so fast they hardly knew what hit them.*’ The infant died of a skull fracture and his 30-year-old mother suffered broken ribs and a broken leg and ankle. No illnesses have been reported because of the tainted beef, which was discovered in a random check of meat by an Agriculture Department inspector at a grocery store in Emporia, Va., on Sept. 4. Because the hamburger was a fresh product with a shelf life of about two weeks, U SDA officials believe it has probably been consumed or discarded, although some people may have some frozen at home. Some meat went to restaurants, hotels and other food service establishments. The recalled beef was produced by BeefAmenca Inc. in Norfolk, Neb., on Aug. 31, 22 and 23, USDA spokeswoman J ac que Knight said Fnday. BeefAmerica said it was voluntarily recalling the ground beef even though the company had doubts its plant was responsible for the contamination. “We feel that there is significant doubt in our minds that we are the culprits of this. But that is not really the point right now,’’ said Keith DeHaan, a company spokesman in Omaha, Neb. “The culture right now is if you’re going to err you’re going to err on the side of safety. We believe in that culture,” DeHaan said. There are no specific product labels or codes for consumers to look for, USDA officials said, reinforcing the necessity of properly preparing food.
