New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - October 4, 2003, New Braunfels, Texas Page 4B HFRALD-ZErruNG — Saturday, October 4, 2003Like it or not, we’re all ‘pro-choice’ RELIGION NEWS IIM JUDKINS lh i Ret’, lim Intl kins is the teat bing minister (it hirst Protestant ( hindi, where he leads the i onteniporary worship service 'sundays ould it surprise you to know that God is "pro-choice”? We all believe that by God’s design, our choices are our own. God permits us to make our own ^ choices about everything from the food we eat to the people we sleep with. Yet I wonder if we would not be better off if God was not pro-choice. Perhaps God regrets giving us the latitude to make our own decisions. After all, it is because we have choice that we need a Savior. If it’s not bad enough we make bad choices to begin with, we tend to make additional bad choices in an effort to minimize any unwanted consequences of the first one. A snowflake quickly becomes a snowball. Abortion may be the worst example ol this process. An innocent pre-born baby dies as the additional bad choice of someone whose first choice was to engage in the act that, under God’s design, results in pregnancy. It is a decision that tries to counteract the initial misuse of free will given to us by our pro-choice God. It should be reasonable to expect a man and a woman who knew they were not ready to be parents would recognize that they were therefore not ready to have sex, either. After all, sex, while a wonderful blessing from God, assumes that conception will occur when • "The only choice that enables us to make God-honoring decisions is the initial choice to follow Jesus." egg and sperm unite. Fertilization is inherent in the system. As I remove my head from the sandy soil of God s ideals, I realize that people generally do not think (at least not with the proper anatomical organ) when they have illicit sex. Yet, a choice was made at that point nonetheless that is designed to start a process of apparently unexpected and unwelcome consequences. Bad choices are inevitable for people who serve themselves rather than Christ. Until Jesus heals and transforms our misguided nature, we are driven by our own interests. Illicit sexual activity is just one of many similar choices made by people whose “self" is still in charge. Why wouldn't a woman who chose to he sexually irresponsible use the same self-serving values to guide her in murdering the resulting pre-born baby and thereby protect her current interests? The only choice that enables us to make God-honoring decisions is the initial chou e to follow Jesus. Jesus’ absolute leadership guides us to make choices that have lifegiving consequences for everyone. Tomorrow’s "Life Chain” should remind evei y Christian that godless people naturally make godless choices. Only Christ-centered people are equipped to stop a destructive cycle with the first choice. Griffin named Anglican Canon The Rev. William L. Griffin, parish priest at St. joseph Anglican Church in New Braunfels, has been named a Canon of the Church by the Right Rev. Richard J. Boyce, bishop of the Diocese of the West of the Anglican Province of America. Boyce said he is bestowing this title and ecclesiastical rank on Griffin in perpetuity because of his advice and counsel to the clergy and parishes of the new diocese. Until recently, this had been a missionary district of the church, and Griffin played a role in the growth that led to it becoming a diocese. Prior to moving to Texas two years ago, Griffin had been a psychotherapist in private practice for many years, as well as a priest.
