BY Jo LEE FERGUSON Staff Writer The New Braunfels Civic Center is black and white and just waiting to be read all over this week The center is home to the Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale from 9 to 1 Thursday and 9 to 5 Friday Entry to the sale is free There are thousands of said Margaret Brazle president of Friends of the Library and chairwoman of the book sale ABOUT IT WHAT Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale WHEN to 7 Thursday 9 to 5 Friday Also 4 to 5 Friday for all the books that fit in a paper bag WHERE New Braunfels Civic Center 380 S Seguin Most of the books are priced at 75 cents for hardbacks or 25 cents for paperbacks Books are even cheaper between 4 and 5 Friday During that time cus tomers pay for all the books they can fit into a paper bag Detective stories romances mysteries and westerns are among the variety of books offered in the sale Other types of books include Texana collectibles and first edition books Some books in these categories are more expen sive than other books Brazle and other members of Friends of the Library prepare for the book sale yearround They collected hundreds of boxes of donated books in a storage unit for the sale See BOOK CHRIS King Motorists who move these barricades put the public and construction workers at risk safety officials warned BY RON MALONEY Staff Writer Construction workers and public safety officials report the moving of traffic barricades in construc tion areas is increasing and is a danger to workers and the public alike And moving those barriers for any reason can get someone a pretty pricey citation Charles Chance construction inspector for the Texas Department of Transportation said the illegal moving of the safety barriers has become a notice able problem lately We havent had any accidents Chance said One of our big objectives out here is to make these construction areas as safe as possible for our work ers and the traveling public I want to keep from get ting someone hurt Basically what weve got is over the past six weeks weve started having a problem with the traveling public moving some of our barricades The barricades are the threepaneled safety gates with the orange and white stripes We put the barricades out for the safety of the traveling public so they can make their way through a work site and for the safety of our Chance said If a barricade is moved to an improper position it puts the public and our workers at risk Motorists who move those barricades also put their bank balances at risk if New Braunfels Police See No left turn Motorists attempting make a left onto either frontage Scheduling program works well BY JENNIFER RODRIGUEZ Staff Writer After more than a year on a schedule created to offer students the better fit of two worlds longer classes versus daily exposure administrators at New Braunfels High School say things are going well All of our base sign indicators are improving I dont think you can credit that to the schedule The whole focus the whole environment has changed at this high Assistant Principal Elisa Racanelli said We as a school are doing a of meeting the needs of NBHS struggled for five years to find a scheduling system to fit student needs against parent and teacher concerns I hate to make it an issue Finally weve come to peace with Racanelli said And great things are going on in the class rooms I feel that the students and the parents are happy with the current situation at the high After the Texas Education agency increased the number of credits needed to graduate in 1994 the traditional sevenperi od schedule at NBHS had to be reconfigured To help students get more credits completed in a year NBHS changed to an alternating block schedule of 90minute classes in 19941995 Parents complained about the time gap between core studies like English and math so another scheduling committee was formed in 1996 to explore changing the sched ule again In 199798 NBISD chose a hybrid schedule one that allowed students two 90minute block classes and three 60 minute daily classes with the approval of trustees the sched uling committee the onsite management committee and teach ers Then NBHS teachers formed an internal task force during the 199798 school year and recommended an rotating block schedule So NBISD formed another committee this time of 15 teachers and 15 community members to find a compromise At a public forum in 1998 teachers supported 90minute classes that allow more instruction time and parents preferred short er daily core classes After nine months the committee announced it was dead locked and Superintendent Ron Reaves decided to offer students the current hybrid schedule The lay person might think he needs a degree in rocket scit See FITSKO Water completed two years of work on a plan that seeks to meet all the projected water needs for the county area that includes Comal County for the next 50 years Public hearings on the plan were conducted
